Quick Answer

A failing PS4 power supply usually shows up as random shutdowns during games, a console that cuts out with no warning, or a PS4 that gives no light and no beep at all. The PSU is inside the console on the Original, Slim and Pro, so it cannot be tested or replaced safely at home. Console Service Centre in Boksburg, South Africa tests and replaces PS4 power supplies, and the R599 bench fee only applies if you decline the repair or the console cannot be fixed.

Your PS4 was fine an hour ago. Now it cuts out halfway through a match, the screen goes black, and the light on the front simply goes dark. Sometimes it starts again straight away. Sometimes it won't start at all until it has been unplugged for a while.

When a PS4 behaves like this, the internal power supply is one of the first parts we suspect. This guide covers the signs of a failing PS4 power supply on the Original, Slim and Pro. It also covers what you can safely check at home, how we test the supply on the bench, and how we tell a bad power supply apart from a motherboard fault.

PS4 power supply problems: the short answer

PS4 power supply problems usually show up in one of three ways. The console shuts off during games with no warning, it gives no light and no beep when you press the power button, or it starts, cuts out and keeps restarting. Every PS4 model has its power supply inside the console, fed by a two-pin figure-8 cable. The supply converts mains power into the low voltage the motherboard runs on. Once it weakens, it can drop out under the heavy load of a game even though the menus work fine. Check the cable, the wall socket and the ventilation first. If the fault stays, the supply needs a bench test, because a shorted motherboard can look exactly the same. Console Service Centre in Boksburg tests and replaces PS4 power supplies in the workshop and through nationwide courier.

The rest of this post explains each sign, what you can check yourself, and what happens once the console reaches our bench.

What the PS4 power supply actually does

Every PS4 model has an internal power supply unit, usually shortened to PSU. There is no external brick like the one on the original Xbox One. The mains cable plugs straight into the back of the console, and the PSU sits inside the shell.

Its job is simple to describe. It takes mains power from the wall and turns it into the low DC voltage the motherboard needs. The labels on PS4 supplies list a main 12-volt output, which feeds the processor, memory, hard drive and fan. They also list a much smaller standby output. That standby side is what keeps the console able to respond to the power button and to wake from rest mode.

That split matters when you are diagnosing a fault:

  • If the standby side fails, the console usually looks completely dead. There is no light and no beep, and the power button does nothing.
  • If the main 12-volt side is weak, the console may start normally and run the menus. It then cuts out when a game puts the processor and graphics under heavy load and the power demand jumps.

That second pattern is why many people never suspect the power supply. The PS4 "works", until it doesn't.

Which power supply does your PS4 use?

Sony used several different power supplies across the PS4 range. They are not interchangeable between models, and the connector even changed between revisions of the Original. These are the model families we fit on the bench:

PS4 modelPSU models usedNotes
PS4 OriginalADP-240AR, ADP-240CR, ADP-200ERThe ADP-240AR is the 5-pin unit used in the earliest CUH-10xx consoles. The ADP-240CR is a 4-pin unit used in CUH-11xx consoles. The ADP-200ER is used in CUH-12xx consoles.
PS4 SlimADP-160CR, ADP-160ER, ADP-160FRSmaller unit. Which one is fitted depends on the console's revision.
PS4 ProADP-300CR, ADP-300ER, ADP-300FRThe Pro has a higher-output supply. Which one is fitted depends on the console's revision.

The model number is printed on the PSU itself, so we confirm it once the console is open. The console's CUH model number gives a good first guess. The printed PSU label is the final word, because the wrong unit either won't fit or won't connect.

The signs of a failing PS4 power supply

Below are the symptoms we see most often when a PS4 comes in with a power supply fault. Many of them overlap with other faults, which is why a bench test matters. Still, the pattern you notice at home tells us a lot.

1. Random shutdowns during games

This is the classic sign. The PS4 runs the home screen, the PlayStation Store and video apps without trouble. Then it shuts off a few minutes into a demanding game, or during a busy scene with a lot happening on screen.

There is often no warning message. The picture goes black, the fan stops and the light goes out, all at once. That sudden, total cut-out points to power rather than heat. Overheating normally builds up first: the fan gets louder and louder before anything happens.

2. No power at all

You press the power button and nothing happens. There is no beep, no light and no fan spin. You try another cable and another wall socket, and it is still dead.

That points to the standby side of the PSU, or to a fault that is stopping the supply from starting at all. It is the most obvious power supply symptom, but it is not proof on its own. A short on the motherboard can stop a healthy PSU from starting too. We cover that further down.

3. It starts, cuts out, and won't start again straight away

Some failing supplies start the console, cut out after a short while, and then refuse to start again until the console has been unplugged for a few minutes. Customers describe it as the PS4 "needing a rest" before it will power up.

This is typical of a supply that is breaking down under heat or load. Unplugging lets the parts inside cool down, so it works again briefly before the fault returns.

4. A beep, then nothing

The PS4 beeps once when you press the power button, the light flashes briefly, and then it goes dark. The console is trying to start the main power stage and failing.

On its own this sign can come from the PSU or from the motherboard. It is one of the cases where we have to measure rather than guess.

5. Clicking, buzzing or a burnt smell

Some customers notice a faint click or tick from inside the console just as it cuts out. Others hear a high-pitched buzz or whine from the back of the console, near where the mains cable plugs in.

A burnt electrical smell is the most serious of these signs. If you smell burning from your PS4, unplug it at the wall and do not use it again until it has been checked. Do not keep testing it to see if it comes back.

6. Shutdowns that started after a power cut

In South Africa, a lot of PS4 power supply failures start after a power interruption. The console was plugged in during load shedding or a local outage. When the power came back, it came back with a spike, and from then on the console has been unreliable or dead.

The power supply is the first thing in the line from the wall. It takes the hit before anything else does, which is why surge damage so often ends at the PSU. If you have been through a lot of outages, our load shedding console damage guide explains how to protect the console.

Is it the power supply, overheating, or something else?

Because "my PS4 keeps turning off" has several possible causes, it helps to know how the power supply pattern differs from the others. Our PS4 keeps shutting down guide covers all the causes of random shutdowns in detail. Here is the short comparison as it relates to the PSU.

Power supply fault

  • Shuts off suddenly with no build-up
  • Often happens in demanding games, rarely on the menus
  • Can be completely dead with no light or beep
  • Sometimes needs to be unplugged before it will start again

Overheating

  • The fan gets very loud before the shutdown
  • The console feels hot to the touch around the vents
  • Usually happens after a while of play, not straight away
  • Gets worse in a hot room or an enclosed TV cabinet
  • PS4 consoles use thermal paste between the processor and heatsink, and old paste dries out over the years

Blue Light of Death (BLOD)

  • The light pulses blue and never turns white
  • There is no picture on the TV
  • It is usually a processor solder fault, not a power supply fault
  • See our PS4 blue light of death guide

Software or hard drive faults

  • The console freezes or crashes to an error screen rather than losing power
  • The light usually stays on
  • The fault can often be narrowed down from Safe Mode

If your PS4 won't come on at all rather than shutting down, our PS4 won't turn on troubleshooting guide walks through the complete dead-console checklist.

How to troubleshoot PS4 power supply problems at home

These checks are all external and safe. They rule out the simple causes before you pay for a diagnosis. None of them involve opening the console.

  1. Unplug the PS4 at the wall for a few minutes. Then plug it back in and try again. This clears the standby power and gives the console a clean restart.
  2. Plug straight into a wall socket. Take the PS4 off any multiplug, extension lead or power strip. A tired multiplug or loose socket can cause exactly the same cut-outs as a failing PSU.
  3. Try a different figure-8 cable. The PS4 uses a standard two-pin figure-8 (IEC C7) mains cable. A damaged or loose cable is cheap to rule out. Make sure it pushes fully home into the back of the console.
  4. Look at the cable and socket for scorch marks. Any browning, melting or burnt smell around the plug means stop. Unplug the console and bring it in rather than testing further.
  5. Give the console space. Move it out of any closed cabinet and leave room around the vents. Wipe dust from the outside of the vents with a dry cloth. This rules out heat as the main cause.
  6. Note when it cuts out. Does it shut down on the menus, or only in games? Straight away, or after a while? Does the fan get loud first? These notes help us find the fault faster.
  7. Try Safe Mode if the console starts. With the PS4 off, hold the power button and release it after the second beep, which takes about seven seconds. If the console cuts out even in Safe Mode, a hardware power fault is much more likely than a software one.

If the PS4 still shuts down or stays dead after all of that, the fault is inside the console.

Why we will never tell you to open the power supply

You will find videos showing people opening PS4 power supplies to look for blown parts. Please don't. Console power supplies contain large capacitors that store high voltage, between 200 and 400 volts each. That charge can stay there after the console has been unplugged. If those capacitors are not discharged properly, they can burn you badly or kill you.

Opening the console itself carries risks as well. Opening your PS4 risks causing additional damage, such as broken flex cables, stripped screws or damaged connectors, and that makes the repair more expensive. We strongly recommend leaving internal repairs to professionals. Consoles regularly come in where the original fault was a simple supply swap, and the DIY attempt has added a torn ribbon cable or a snapped connector to the bill.

PSU or motherboard? How we test a PS4 on the bench

This is the most important part of the repair. A failing power supply and a faulty motherboard can produce exactly the same symptoms. Fitting a new PSU without testing first can mean paying for a part that does not fix anything.

Here is how we narrow it down at the workshop:

  1. We confirm the symptom. We power the console on our bench and reproduce the fault. If it only cuts out under load, we run a demanding game until it does.
  2. We check the console's model and PSU type. The console's CUH model number tells us which power supply family to expect. Once the console is open, the PSU label confirms the exact unit.
  3. We inspect the supply and the board. We look for burnt or discoloured areas, bulging capacitors and signs of surge damage. We also check for liquid damage or corrosion around the power connector.
  4. We check the motherboard for a short. With a multimeter, we check whether the board's main power line is shorted. A shorted motherboard pulls too much current, and the power supply shuts itself down to protect itself. In that case the PSU is healthy and the board is the real problem.
  5. We test with a known-good supply. We connect a matching power supply that we know works. If the fault disappears and the console runs a demanding game without cutting out, the original PSU is confirmed as the cause.
  6. We fit the replacement and stress-test. The new PSU goes in, the console is reassembled, and we run it under load to make sure the shutdowns are gone.

This order matters. If the board is shorted, a new PSU would simply shut down too, or could even be damaged. Testing the board first protects you from paying for the wrong part.

When it turns out to be the motherboard

Sometimes the power supply checks out fine and the fault is on the board. Common examples are a shorted component on the main power line, damage from a power surge that passed through the supply, or a processor fault. Those go to our board-level repair bench, and we tell you what we found and what it will cost before any work is done.

PS4 power supply replacement: what it costs

Prices are set per PS4 model, because each one uses a different power supply. These are our current PS4 power supply replacement prices:

  • PS4 Original power supply replacement: R1,699 – R1,849
  • PS4 Slim power supply replacement: R1,749 – R1,849
  • PS4 Pro power supply replacement: R1,799 – R1,849

Where a model shows a range, the final price depends on which PSU revision your console has. We confirm that on the bench before you approve anything.

A few things that help when you compare quotes:

  • Diagnosis comes first. We confirm the power supply is the fault before we replace it, so you are not paying for a guess.
  • The R599 bench fee only applies if you decline the repair after diagnosis, or if the console turns out to be unrepairable. If you go ahead, you pay the repair price.
  • Every repair carries our 6-month money-back warranty. If the same fault comes back, we fix it.
  • Most repairs are done in 1-2 working days, based on our current workshop queue. Board-level faults found during diagnosis can take a little longer. Courier repairs add courier transit each way.

Is a PS4 power supply replacement worth it?

For most PS4 owners, yes. The power supply is a self-contained part. Once it is replaced, the console is usually back to normal, with the rest of the hardware untouched. Your games, saves and settings live on the hard drive, which a power supply replacement doesn't touch.

It is worth weighing up in two situations:

  • The board is damaged as well. If a surge has taken out the PSU and part of the motherboard, the total repair costs more. We give you the full picture after diagnosis, so you can decide whether it still makes sense.
  • The console has several other faults. If the PS4 also needs disc drive work or has a worn HDMI port, we tell you. You can then choose whether to fix everything at once or not at all.

If the power supply is the only fault, replacing it is one of the more straightforward PS4 repairs. It is usually far cheaper than buying another console.

How to prevent PS4 power supply failure

Power supplies wear out with age and heat, so nothing makes one last forever. These habits do reduce the strain on it:

  • Use a proper surge protector. A good surge-protected plug takes the spike when the power returns after an outage, instead of the PSU. See our guide to the best surge protectors for gaming in South Africa.
  • Unplug during load shedding if you can. If you know an outage is coming, unplug the PS4 at the wall. Plug it back in a few minutes after the power has returned and settled.
  • Consider a UPS. A small uninterruptible power supply keeps the console running smoothly through short dips and gives you time to shut down properly.
  • Keep it ventilated. Heat ages a power supply's parts faster. Leave space around the console and avoid closed cabinets.
  • Keep dust under control. Wipe the outside vents regularly. Dust builds up inside over the years and holds heat against the parts. A professional full service clears it out properly without you having to open the console.
  • Avoid cheap multiplugs. Loose or overloaded multiplugs cause voltage drops and arcing, which are hard on any power supply.
  • Shut down properly. Use the power menu rather than pulling the plug while the console is running, so the hard drive and system software are not interrupted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of PS4 power supply problems?

The most common signs are sudden shutdowns during games, a console that is completely dead with no light or beep, and a PS4 that cuts out and won't restart until it has been unplugged for a while. Some customers also notice a click, a buzz or a burnt smell from the back of the console. These signs can also come from a motherboard fault, so a bench test is needed to confirm it.

Is the PS4 power supply internal or external?

It is internal on every PS4 model: the Original, the Slim and the Pro. The console uses a standard two-pin figure-8 mains cable that plugs straight into the back. There is no external power brick, so a faulty PSU means the console has to be opened by a technician.

Can I swap a PS4 Slim power supply into a PS4 Pro?

No. The Slim uses the ADP-160 series of power supplies and the Pro uses the higher-output ADP-300 series. They are different units and are not interchangeable. Even within the PS4 Original range, the connector changed between revisions, so the supply has to match your console's exact revision.

How do I know if it's the power supply or the motherboard?

You can't tell for sure without testing. A shorted motherboard makes a healthy power supply shut itself down, which looks exactly like a failed PSU from the outside. On the bench we check the board for a short with a multimeter. We then test the console with a known-good supply before replacing anything.

Will a PS4 power supply replacement delete my games?

No. Your games, saves and settings are stored on the PS4's hard drive, and replacing the power supply does not affect it. If you play online, your PlayStation Network account and any cloud saves stay as they are.

How long does a PS4 power supply repair take?

Most repairs are finished within our current workshop turnaround shown in the cost section above. If diagnosis shows a board fault as well, the repair can take a little longer, and we tell you before any extra work starts. Courier repairs add courier transit each way.

Can load shedding damage a PS4 power supply?

Yes. When power returns after an outage it can come back with a voltage spike, and the power supply takes that hit first. A lot of PS4 power faults we see started straight after an outage. A surge protector, a UPS, or unplugging the console during load shedding all reduce the risk.

Is it safe to open a PS4 power supply myself?

No. Console power supplies contain capacitors that store between 200 and 400 volts each, and that charge can remain after the console has been unplugged. If they are not discharged correctly they can cause serious burns or a fatal shock. Leave PSU testing and replacement to a trained technician.
