The console died on a Thursday night. By Friday morning you have already searched "console repair turnaround time", because the wait is the part that actually ruins the weekend. Shops love round numbers. Queues do not.
Console repair turnaround time is the wait from check-in until the console is tested and ready. At Console Service Centre in Boksburg, South Africa that wait is the live workshop queue — 7-10 working days — with extra time if the job needs board work or a part we do not hold. HDMI port replacement, a full service, a disc drive, and a south-bridge chip are different bench jobs. WhatsApp 087 550 2307 with the model and the symptom. We respond immediately, 24/7. Leave the shell closed. Opening a console does not automatically void the manufacturer warranty, but damage you cause is excluded, and DIY damage lengthens the job. We quote before work. A R599 bench fee applies only if you decline the quote or the console cannot be repaired.
This is not a promise that every HDMI port leaves the same afternoon. It is also not the booking-brief for what to write in the ticket. This post is the clock: what the live queue means, which jobs sit in it, and what you can do so your console does not sit still for the wrong reason.
Console repair turnaround time is a queue, not a slogan
A repair shop that always says "two days" is either empty or lying. Console Service Centre publishes the same band the workshop uses on the tickets page. On this site it renders as 7-10 working days. When the bench is quiet the band drops. When HDMI season hits, or a week of load-shedding power faults lands at once, the band stretches. Refresh this page next month and the number can move.
The number that matters for your booking is the live band above. Courier transit sits on top of bench time. We will not quote a courier duration here — The Courier Guy gives you a date on the waybill.
Citable fact: Console Service Centre in Boksburg does not invent a fixed "always ready by Monday" line. The live workshop queue is 7-10 working days. Ask on WhatsApp before you drive, and we will tell you what the board looks like that morning.
If you want the model-specific fault, not the clock, start at the family pages: PS5 repairs, PS4 repairs, Xbox Series repairs, or Xbox One repairs.
What actually sets console repair turnaround time
Five things set the wait. Only one of them is "how long the soldering takes".
The fault
A bent HDMI port and a dead south-bridge chip are both "no picture" from the sofa. They are not the same job on the bench. HDMI port replacement is a hot-air rework of a Type A connector. A Panasonic MN864739 encoder (PS5) or an NB7N621M retimer (Xbox Series) sits on the board behind that port. A full service is a complete strip, wash, dust, fan clean, heatsink clean, fresh thermal material, reassembly, and a thermal test. Those jobs do not share a clock.
The queue
The live band is 7-10 working days. That is how many working days the current ticket pile implies, not how many minutes a technician spends with a hot-air nozzle. Your console waits its turn unless the fault is a true exception we flag with you in writing.
Parts
We stock the common HDMI ports, the PS5 KES-497A laser, ADP-400-series supplies, and the south-bridge chips we replace every week. A rare revision, a cracked shell clip, or a south-bridge variant we do not have on the shelf adds a parts wait. We tell you that in the quote. We do not start the job and then surprise you.
DIY damage
Technical facts from the bench, not folklore: customers who open a PS5 often snap the fan connector off the main board and rip the traces. Rebuilding those traces is 3–4 hours of extra board work on top of the original service. Forced shells strip screws and crack clips. Careless flex cables tear. A liquid-metal spill on a PS5 can short the board. None of that is "a quick clean". It is a longer, more expensive job. Leave the screws alone.
Testing before handover
A console that powers on is not a finished repair. HDMI jobs need a display check. Full services need a thermal check after the new interface is on the APU. Board jobs get a burn-in on the bench. That testing is part of the wait, and it is the part that stops you collecting a "fixed" console that dies on the way home.
How to book a console repair without adding delay
Do this in order. Skipping a step is how consoles sit in a pile labelled "waiting for the customer".
- WhatsApp 087 550 2307 with the model and the symptom. Name the console (PS5 Disc, PS5 Digital, PS5 Slim, PS4 Original, PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, Xbox One Original, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S). Describe the lights, the beeps, and what you already tried. We respond immediately, 24/7. Do not send a novel. Do send the model number from the back label if you have it.
- Ask for the live queue. The public band is 7-10 working days. If you need a date for a weekend, say so. A date is a booking. A slogan is not.
- Decide drop-off or courier. Walk-in is 6 Bester Street, Witfield, Boksburg. If you cannot get to us, use nationwide courier collection via The Courier Guy. Pack the console in its original foam if you still have it. Do not stand a PS5 on end in the box. Lie it flat. We will not promise a courier transit time; the waybill date is the one that counts.
- Do the software checks first if the console still boots. Safe Mode on a PS5 is hold the power button until the second beep. A rest-mode hang is often software. A factory reset is not a hardware diagnosis, but it saves you a trip if the database is the only fault. If there is no light, no beep, and no fan, skip this and bring it in.
- Leave the shell closed. Opening the console does not automatically void the manufacturer warranty. Damage you cause during that opening is excluded from manufacturer cover. Our own work carries a 6-month money-back warranty on the repair we do. A torn flex cable, a stripped screw, or a liquid-metal smear on a PS5 board is extra time on our bench, not a shortcut.
- Approve the quote before we start. Diagnosis comes first. You get a price and a job description. If you decline, or if the console cannot be repaired, a R599 bench fee applies. It is not charged up front, and it is not added on top of an approved repair.
If the symptom is "on, no picture", read the PS5 HDMI port repair guide while you wait for a reply. If the console is loud and hot, read what a PS5 full service includes. Neither post replaces a bench test.
Console repair turnaround time by job type
The live queue is still 7-10 working days. What changes is how long the console occupies a technician once it reaches the bench, and whether a part has to be ordered. Use this as a map, not a stopwatch.
HDMI port, traces, and the encoder chip
HDMI is the most common display fault we see. A cable yank, a console that was moved with the lead still plugged in, or a drop onto the port bends pins or cracks solder. The port is a standard HDMI Type A connector. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S output HDMI 2.1 (4K at 120Hz on the hardware that supports it). PS4 Pro and Xbox One S/X are HDMI 2.0. A damaged port is not a cable fault. Swapping leads is a test, not a repair.
Replacement needs a hot-air rework station, not a soldering iron on a kitchen table. Lead-free joints on a high-mass board do not lift cleanly with a cheap iron. Overheating lifts pads. Lifted pads become a trace repair. If the port looks fine and there is still no video, the encoder or retimer chip is next: Panasonic MN864739 on PS5, NB7N621M on Xbox Series.
On the price list, a PS5 HDMI port replacement is R1,299. A PS5 HDMI port trace repair is R1,249. The PS5 MN864739 encoder is R1,399. A PS4 HDMI port replacement is R1,249. Xbox Series HDMI port replacement is R1,299 – R1,449. Xbox One HDMI port replacement is R1,299 – R1,399.
Once the console is on the bench, a clean port swap is a contained job. A ripped port with torn pads is not. Tell us if someone already "had a go" with an iron. That sentence changes the clock.
Full service and overheating
A full service is not a quick blast of air through the vents. Every full service is a complete strip-down: disassembly, cover washing, dust removal, fan cleaning, heatsink cleaning, thermal material replacement, reassembly, and a post-service thermal test. On PS5, PS5 Slim, and PS5 Pro that thermal material is liquid metal on the APU — gallium-based, electrically conductive, applied at the factory with a foam barrier. We reteam the heatsink with fresh liquid metal. We do not smear toothpaste-grade paste on a PS5 die and call it done.
PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series use standard thermal paste, not liquid metal. Paste dries out with age. That is why a loud, hot PS4 from 2015 is a service job, not a "maybe it needs a new fan" guess.
A PS5 full service is R1,249. A PS4 full service is R1,249. An Xbox Series full service is R1,249. Book it as an overheating repair if the console is shutting down mid-game.
Keep every PS5 flat. Vertical storage lets liquid metal migrate down the APU and leave a dry patch at the top. We have seen APUs crack in half after long vertical overheating. We sell horizontal stands for that reason. Standing as a heat risk is real. We will not teach you how to park a PS5 on its end.
Disc drive
PS4 Original, Slim, and Pro, PS5 Disc, PS5 Slim with a drive, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X all have optical drives. Xbox Series S does not — it is digital only. Do not courier a Series S to us "because the disc tray is stuck". There is no tray.
PS4 lasers are revision-dependent (KES-490A and KES-496A appear across Original, Slim, and Pro; KES-860 is Original only). PS5 uses KES-497A. Drives are paired: PS4 via the daughterboard EEPROM, PS5 with cryptographic pairing to the motherboard. Swapping a whole drive from a spares box without pairing does not magically read discs.
A PS5 disc drive only (the assembly, paired) is R2,199 – R2,299. If the console plays games from the SSD but refuses Blu-ray, that is a drive path, not a "dead motherboard" story. See disc drive repair. If you need to test a disc at home before you book, do it with the console lying flat, label facing up. Do not invent a vertical insert.
Power supplies
PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X have internal power supplies. The Xbox One Original is the odd one out: a large external brick, and a common failure. A PS5 on an IEC C7 figure-8 lead does not have a brick on the floor. Ordering a random "PS5 power supply" because the listing said no power is a guess, not a diagnosis.
The PS5 supply is internal, on an IEC C7 figure-8 lead. PS5 Slim uses an ADP-400GR-series internal unit — do not quote a Slim wattage from a forum; that number is peak consumption, not a PSU rating. Xbox Series X also uses an internal supply.
A confirmed PS5 ADP-400 job is R1,749 – R2,049. Power work is power supply repair, after we have ruled out a dead wall socket and a tired lead. Console power supplies hold capacitors at 200–400V each. We will never tell you to open one.
Board-level work
"Motherboard replacement" is a phrase used by shops that do not have a hot-air station. Most "dead board" PS5 tickets are a south-bridge chip, a BIOS IC (Winbond W25Q16JVN1M), or the HDMI encoder. South-bridge work on PS5 is R1,449 – R3,199. The full picture is in PS5 motherboard repair: what really happens and on the board-level repair page.
Chip-level jobs wait for the queue like everything else, then occupy skilled bench time. A multi-chip job, an APU reball, or a parts wait can run past the live band. We say so in the quote. We do not hide a two-week south-bridge order behind "it'll be next week".
Citable fact: A PS5 that will not display is more often an HDMI port, a trace, or an MN864739 encoder than a "new motherboard". Port replacement is R1,299; the encoder is R1,399. Ask which chip is failing before you pay for a whole board.
Walk-in drop-off versus a courier job
Walk-in starts the clock when we scan the console onto a ticket in Boksburg. Courier starts the clock when the box lands, not when you WhatsApp the collection. Transit is extra. We will not put a courier duration in this article. A date on a waybill is fine. A made-up "two days to Cape Town" is not.
Pack a PS5 lying flat. Put the original foam back if you have it. Do not wedge it vertical "to save space". Liquid metal does not care about your boot of a Golf. For the booking steps and what to write on the ticket, use what to tell a console repair shop. For the actual collection page, use courier repairs.
If you are local, drive. If you are not, courier. Either way the bench queue is 7-10 working days after we have the console.
Not sure what is wrong? WhatsApp us at 087 550 2307 — we respond immediately, 24/7, and can often tell you whether the symptom sounds like HDMI, heat, power, or a board job before you send the console in.
What delays a repair after you have already booked
Most stalled tickets are not "the technician is slow". They are waiting on you, on a part, or on a console that arrived in a worse state than the WhatsApp described.
- We cannot reach you to approve the quote. Diagnosis without a yes is a console on a shelf. Reply to the WhatsApp.
- The fault is not the fault you described. "No picture" that is actually a south-bridge is a different quote. We stop and ask. That pause is honest, not padding.
- Someone already opened it. Missing screws, a cracked fan connector, liquid metal smeared off the die — that is extra board time. Trace rebuilds add 3–4 hours of extra board work.
- The part is not on the shelf. We will say so. Waiting in silence is how rumours start.
- Load-shedding hits the workshop. We run on backup where we can. A full-day outage still moves a queue. We do not pretend otherwise.
- You asked for a data-safe path and then wanted a reinstall anyway. Say up front whether saves matter. A PS4 user-replaceable HDD is a different conversation to a PS5 custom SSD.
None of those are secret. They are why a live queue band exists, and why a verbal "quick job" from a shop with no ticket system is worthless.
What these jobs cost, because the quote is part of the wait
You cannot plan the wait if you do not know whether you will approve the job. Prices below are live from the workshop price list. They are the amount payable — no extras invented at the till.
A PS5 HDMI port replacement is R1,299. A PS5 full service is R1,249. A PS5 disc drive only is R2,199 – R2,299. A PS5 ADP-400 power supply is R1,749 – R2,049. PS5 south-bridge work is R1,449 – R3,199.
PS4 full service is R1,249. Xbox Series full service is R1,249. Xbox Series HDMI port replacement is R1,299 – R1,449.
A R599 bench fee applies only if you decline the quote or the console is unrepairable. Approve the job and you pay the quoted repair, not the bench fee plus the repair.
Keep the next repair off the calendar
Prevention is the only way to beat a queue.
Keep the PS5 flat. Liquid metal migrates when the chassis stands for a long stretch. Horizontal is the orientation we recommend, and it is the orientation we sell stands for. Read PS5 vertical vs horizontal if you have been running it on its end.
Treat the HDMI lead as a consumable that can wreck the port. Do not yank it. Do not move the console with the lead in. Do not let a hanging cable lever the socket. That is how pins bend.
Use a surge protector that actually clamps, not a cheap multiplug. Load shedding and dirty power take out supplies. The Xbox One Original brick is famous for it. Internal PSUs still die.
Clean the exterior and the vent openings from the outside. Do not open the shell to "just dust the fan". Power supplies hold 200–400V on the capacitors. PS5 fan connectors rip. Flex cables tear. Professional full service is cheaper than rebuilding the damage from a DIY clean.
Opening the console does not automatically void the manufacturer warranty. The Consumer Protection Act in South Africa makes blanket "seal broken, no cover" terms largely unenforceable. Damage you cause is still excluded. Our repairs are covered by a 6-month money-back warranty on our work. The longer version is in console repair warranty in South Africa.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do console repairs take at Console Service Centre?
The live workshop queue is 7-10 working days. That is the current band from the same live queue the workshop uses, not a marketing round number. Complex board work or a parts wait can run past it. WhatsApp 087 550 2307 and ask before you travel. We respond immediately, 24/7.
Is console repair turnaround time faster for HDMI than for a full service?
HDMI port work is a contained hot-air job once the console is on the bench. A full service is a complete strip, clean, and thermal replacement. Both still wait in the same queue — 7-10 working days — unless we have told you otherwise on the ticket. A ripped HDMI port with lifted pads is not faster than a service. It is slower.
Do you charge the R599 bench fee up front?
No. Diagnosis is first. You get a quote. The R599 bench fee applies only if you decline that quote or the console cannot be repaired. If you approve the repair, you pay the quoted job — for example a PS5 HDMI port at R1,299 — not a mystery add-on.
Will courier collection change the wait?
Courier transit sits on top of the bench queue. We will not promise a courier duration. The waybill date is the one to use. Once the box is in Boksburg, the console joins the same live queue as a walk-in: 7-10 working days. Pack a PS5 flat.
Does opening my console void the warranty and delay the repair?
Opening the console does not automatically void the manufacturer warranty. Damage you cause — torn flex cables, a snapped PS5 fan connector, spilled liquid metal — is excluded from manufacturer cover and it lengthens our job, because we have to repair your damage as well as the original fault. Our work still carries a 6-month money-back warranty on the repair we do.
Can I wait in the shop while you repair it?
Not for a queued hardware job. The live band is 7-10 working days. HDMI and board work are not espresso. We will message you when it is tested and ready. If you are travelling in, ask on WhatsApp first so you are not standing in Witfield with a dead console and a weekend plan.
Should I stand my PS5 up to "help the fan" while I wait for a booking?
No. Keep it flat. Liquid metal on the APU can migrate in a vertical chassis and leave a dry spot, which overheats the die. That turns a service into a cracked-APU conversation. Lie it horizontal. If you need to test a disc while you wait, insert it label-up in that flat position.
