Illustrated graphic-novel scene of a young Black South African woman in her mid-20s wearing a teal-and-white oversized graphic tee at a modern repair workshop bench, looking sceptical as the recurring white male technician in dark apron gestures at a PS5 disc console between them. Customer speech bubble reads: 'They said scrap it.' Tech speech bubble reads: 'Let's take a look.'

Quick Answer

Most PS5 'motherboard' faults are chip-level failures — the south bridge, BIOS IC, or HDMI encoder chip — not a full board failure. Console Service Centre in Boksburg, South Africa repairs these from R1 000, typically in 2–3 working days. If a shop quotes several times that for a 'motherboard replacement', ask exactly which component is being replaced — the answer is revealing.

When a PS5 has a serious hardware fault, someone always tells the owner it needs a "motherboard replacement". Sometimes that's honest. Often it's not — and understanding the difference could save you anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand rand.

This post covers what a PS5 "motherboard" actually is, which components typically fail, what board-level chip repair genuinely costs in South Africa, and the specific pattern of overquoting that we see regularly from shops that use the term "motherboard replacement" as a catch-all for work they know is actually targeted chip-level repair.

If your PS5 has power problems, video issues, or is crashing in ways that software can't fix, this is the most important piece of context you can have before handing it over to anyone.

What People Mean by "PS5 Motherboard"

The PS5's main circuit board — properly called the APU board — is a single large PCB that contains:

  • The custom AMD Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU fused together on one die (the APU)
  • 16GB GDDR6 RAM soldered directly to the board
  • The 825GB NVMe SSD controller
  • The south bridge chip — which handles USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and other I/O connections
  • The BIOS IC (a Winbond W25Q16JVN1M flash chip) — which stores the console's firmware
  • The HDMI encoder IC (Panasonic MN864739) — which processes and outputs the video signal
  • Dozens of power management ICs, capacitors, inductors, and resistors

Critically: Sony does not sell replacement PS5 motherboards to third parties. There is no aftermarket supply chain for PS5 APU boards the way there is for, say, laptop motherboards. When a repair shop tells you they're replacing your "motherboard", they mean one of two things:

  1. They are doing chip-level micro-soldering on your existing board, replacing a failed component (south bridge, BIOS IC, HDMI encoder, etc.) — which is a legitimate, priced repair
  2. They are transplanting your board into a different console sourced from a donor unit — which is rare, expensive, and often not what they're actually doing

The term "motherboard replacement" without that context is meaningless. The next time a shop uses it, ask which chip or component specifically is being replaced.

The Signs That Point to a Board-Level PS5 Fault

Software issues and board-level hardware faults can look identical from the outside. Before assuming the worst, work through the software possibilities first.

Try these first (software fixes that solve a surprising number of cases):

  1. Power cycle properly: Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the PS5 beeps twice and powers down completely. Wait 30 seconds. Power back on.
  2. Enter Safe Mode: Power off completely, then hold the power button until you hear a second beep (about 7 seconds). Connect a DualSense controller via USB. Choose option 6 (Reset PS5) if you're comfortable losing data, or option 4 (Restore Default Settings) as a first pass.
  3. Factory reset via Safe Mode: If the console boots into Safe Mode but not into normal operation, option 6 (Initialize PS5) will wipe user data and reinstall the operating system. This resolves a large proportion of "database corrupted" and crash-on-startup errors.
  4. Check for update: If the PS5 boots but is unstable, ensure it is on the latest firmware. Navigation: Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings.
  5. Check the ventilation and temperature: An overheating PS5 crashes under load, not at startup. If crashes happen only when gaming for extended periods, the problem may be a PS5 full service (dust, degraded liquid metal) rather than a board fault.

If none of the above resolves the issue, the problem is likely hardware. Board-level faults show specific symptoms:

SymptomLikely culprit
No power at all, no LEDPSU fault or south bridge power management

What Actually Fails on a PS5 Board

After repairing thousands of PS5s at Console Service Centre, we can rank the actual failure rates:

South bridge chip (61GG or 69GG variant) — the most common board-level fault after HDMI. The south bridge manages power distribution to the PS5's subsystems, USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. When it fails, symptoms include no power, random shutdowns, or specific I/O going dead. The chip is a BGA (ball grid array) component — it has to be removed under hot air at controlled temperature, cleaned, and a new chip reballed and soldered back on. This is R1,500 at CSC.

BIOS IC (Winbond W25Q16JVN1M) — the PS5 stores its firmware on a small flash chip near the APU. When this chip fails or gets corrupted (sometimes caused by a power surge during load shedding, or a failed system update), the console either won't boot at all, loops at a white light, or shows persistent database errors that survive factory resets. The BIOS IC can be reflashed or replaced — and it holds no user data, so the fix doesn't touch saves or games. BIOS IC repair at CSC is R1,499.

HDMI encoder IC (Panasonic MN864739) — when the HDMI port itself is fine (no bent pins) but the PS5 shows no video output, the fault is usually in the HDMI encoder chip that sits on the board behind the port. This is a common secondary failure after a customer forces a cable into a slightly bent port. HDMI encoder replacement at CSC is R1,599.

APU (AMD Zen 2 + RDNA 2) — the fused CPU/GPU die. True APU failure is rare. When it does happen (usually from liquid metal migration in consoles stored vertically for years — we've seen APUs that cracked in half from localised overheating), the repair is either an APU reball (a temporary fix — success rate varies) or the console is written off. There is no meaningful APU replacement option for PS5.

Citable fact block: The three most commonly repaired chips on a PS5 board at Console Service Centre are the south bridge (R1,500), the BIOS IC (R1,499), and the HDMI encoder (R1,599). All three are hot-air BGA rework jobs, each taking 60–90 minutes of skilled lab time. Sony's liquid metal thermal interface means every board job also involves disassembling and re-sealing the APU thermal system with fresh liquid metal — adding complexity that shops without the proper equipment simply cannot handle safely.

The "PS5 Motherboard Replacement" Scam

Here's the pattern we see regularly:

A customer's PS5 has a south bridge fault. The diagnosis is clear from symptoms and confirmed on a multimeter. The actual repair is a R1,500 chip replacement. But the shop tells the customer: "It needs a motherboard replacement. That'll be R4,500–R6,000."

The customer, understandably, asks no follow-up questions. "Motherboard replacement" sounds like a real job. The shop charges for a board swap, does a targeted chip repair for a fraction of the price, and keeps the difference.

This is not a hypothetical. We see customers who have been quoted this way — sometimes after a shop has already had the console for a week. When they bring it to us for a second opinion, the actual fault is almost always a fixable chip costing R1,499–R1,599.

How to protect yourself:

  1. Ask specifically what component is being replaced. "South bridge chip", "BIOS IC", "HDMI encoder" — these are real answers. "Motherboard" alone is not.
  2. Ask for a written quote with the part number or component name.
  3. Understand that Sony doesn't supply PS5 motherboards as spare parts. If a shop claims to have a "new" PS5 motherboard in stock, ask how. The answer matters.
  4. Get a second opinion if you're quoted more than R2,850 for any board-level repair on a PS5. That's the top of our range for the most complex PS5 board work — anything higher needs a specific explanation.
  5. Check the shop's warranty. Board-level repairs should carry at least 3 months' warranty. A shop doing genuine work will stand behind it.

What the Repair Process Actually Looks Like

Citable fact block: At Console Service Centre in Boksburg, a PS5 board-level repair starts with a full disassembly and visual inspection under magnification. We test the board with a multimeter before any soldering begins. The PS5's liquid metal thermal system is fully serviced at the same time — old liquid metal removed, heatsink cleaned, fresh liquid metal applied. Every repair includes a burn-in test of at least 30 minutes before handover.

Here's the real sequence:

Step 1: Disassembly and diagnostics The console comes apart completely. Every board-level fault starts with a multimeter check of power rails and a visual inspection under a magnifying loupe. We don't solder anything until we know exactly what's wrong. This is also when we assess whether the fault is repairable or whether the APU itself is compromised.

Step 2: Thermal system service Every PS5 board job includes a full liquid metal service. This is not optional. The PS5 uses liquid metal (not thermal paste) between the APU and heatsink — and it degrades, migrates, and occasionally contaminates other components if it's been leaking. We strip it fully, clean both surfaces, and re-apply fresh liquid metal with proper gasket sealing.

Opening your PS5 yourself risks more than just the fault you're trying to fix. The liquid metal thermal interface is electrically conductive. A spill on the wrong component can short the board. The PS5's fan connector is also a well-known casualty of customer attempts — the connector pads pull off the board, turning a routine job into a 3–4 hour trace rebuild. We strongly recommend leaving PS5 board work to professionals.

Step 3: Component removal and replacement BGA chip removal uses a hot air rework station (not a soldering iron — a soldering iron will lift pads and destroy the repair site). The chip is removed, the board pads cleaned with flux and a braid, and a new chip is reballed and placed. On south bridge jobs, the replacement chip comes from a trusted supplier — no refurbished or harvested chips.

Step 4: Flux cleaning and inspection After soldering, the board is cleaned with IPA to remove flux residue. We inspect every joint under magnification. Then the board goes back into a test chassis before full reassembly.

Step 5: Reassembly and burn-in The console is reassembled, liquid metal reseal confirmed, then run through a burn-in test — at least 30 minutes of active gameplay, monitoring temperature. We also test every port and function. Only after the burn-in passes does the job get marked complete.

Typical turnaround: 2–3 working days for south bridge, BIOS IC, and HDMI encoder jobs. Complex APU reball or multiple-chip jobs may take 4–5 days.

When a PS5 Is Worth Repairing (And When It Isn't)

Board repairs are worth it in almost all cases for a PS5, for one reason: a new PS5 Pro costs many times more than a chip-level board repair. A chip repair is less than 10% of replacement cost.

The exception is APU failure. If the APU itself has failed (the die is cracked, or there is catastrophic ball grid damage that survives a reball), the console is not economically repairable. We will always tell you this clearly after diagnostics — we don't charge for the repair if it can't be fixed.

The R199 bench fee covers the diagnostic assessment. If we determine the console is beyond economic repair, you pay R199 and get the console back with a full written explanation.

Our PS5 repair service page shows a full pricing table for every PS5 repair we offer, including board-level work.

Is it worth it to pay for a second opinion?

Yes, almost always. If you've been quoted a price that doesn't feel right, or if a shop used the phrase "motherboard replacement" without specifics, bring it to us. Diagnostics are R199, credited toward the repair if you go ahead. We've saved customers significant money on repairs they were told weren't possible or weren't worth fixing.

Prevention: Reducing Your PS5's Board Repair Risk

You can't prevent every fault. But you can reduce the risk significantly:

Store the PS5 horizontally. This is not optional advice for South African owners. The PS5 uses liquid metal between the APU and heatsink. Stored vertically, gravity slowly pulls that liquid metal downward, leaving a dry spot at the top of the APU die. Over months or years, localised overheating follows. We have seen PS5 APUs crack in half from this mechanism. Horizontal placement keeps the liquid metal evenly distributed.

Use a quality surge protector, not a cheap plug strip. South Africa's grid sends voltage spikes through appliances during load shedding switching. The BIOS IC failure we see most commonly correlates with power cuts — a surge during shutdown can corrupt the flash chip. A proper surge protector rated for South African conditions (3kA minimum clamping current) costs a fraction of a repair. See our guide to surge protectors for gaming for specific recommendations.

Keep vents clear. Dust buildup forces the APU to run hotter. Hotter APU degrades the liquid metal interface faster. Six-monthly external cleaning with compressed air from outside the vents (without opening the console) adds years to the liquid metal's useful life.

Don't attempt a DIY liquid metal reapplication. We see this go wrong more often than it goes right. Liquid metal is electrically conductive. A spill on adjacent capacitors or traces is a board-level repair that didn't need to happen. If the console is genuinely overheating (fan loud, shutting down under load), book a PS5 full service — our techs handle the liquid metal properly and your console comes back cooler and tested.

Professional Repair vs. DIY: The Real Maths

A customer who tries to fix a PS5 board fault themselves and makes it worse typically ends up paying for both the original fault repair AND whatever damage the attempt caused. We have seen:

  • BIOS IC reflash attempts that corrupted the IC permanently (now needs replacement, not reflash)
  • Hot air rework attempts that lifted pads around the south bridge (now needs trace repair first)
  • Liquid metal "servicing" that shorted adjacent capacitors (now needs component identification and replacement under magnification)

In each case, the total repair bill was significantly higher than if the console had come to us first. Professional repair up front is the lower-cost option, almost without exception.

Our PS5 repair service page covers this in more detail — what the repair process involves, what it costs, and why DIY attempts on modern consoles consistently end up costing more than professional repair up front.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does PS5 motherboard repair cost in South Africa?

Most PS5 "motherboard" repairs are chip-level jobs on the south bridge, BIOS IC, or HDMI encoder. At Console Service Centre in Boksburg, south bridge replacement is R1,500, BIOS IC replacement is R1,499, and HDMI encoder replacement is R1,599. A genuine full board-level repair (multiple components or complex trace work) would be quoted individually after diagnostics. We do not quote "motherboard replacement" without specifying which components are involved.

What does a PS5 south bridge do, and how do I know if mine failed?

The south bridge chip manages power delivery to the PS5's subsystems and controls USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Symptoms of south bridge failure include: console not powering on at all, console cycling on and off, specific ports or wireless functions going dead while others work, or random shutdowns that persist after a factory reset. A multimeter check of the board's power rails confirms the diagnosis.

Can PS5 motherboard problems be caused by load shedding?

Yes. Power surges during load shedding switching are a known cause of BIOS IC corruption on the PS5. The BIOS IC is a flash chip that stores the console's firmware — a voltage spike during power restoration can corrupt the stored data, causing the console to fail to boot or loop. A quality surge protector significantly reduces this risk. If your PS5 stopped working after a power cut, BIOS IC corruption is the first thing we check.

Is it worth repairing a PS5 with a board fault?

In almost all cases, yes. A new PS5 Pro costs many times more than a board repair. Chip-level PS5 board repairs at Console Service Centre start from R1,500. Even in the worst realistic scenario (multiple failed components, complex rework), the repair is a fraction of replacement cost. The exception is APU failure — if the main processor die is damaged beyond recovery, we will tell you so clearly after diagnostics.

Does PS5 board repair delete my games and saves?

South bridge, BIOS IC, and HDMI encoder repairs do not touch your storage. Your games, saves, and account data are stored on the PS5's NVMe SSD, which we do not alter during board work. A BIOS IC replacement specifically involves removing and replacing a firmware chip — there is no user data on it. Your saves are safe. (A factory reset, if required as part of software troubleshooting, does delete saves unless they have been backed up to the cloud or a USB drive.)

How long does PS5 board repair take?

Most chip-level PS5 board repairs — south bridge, BIOS IC, HDMI encoder — take 2–3 working days at Console Service Centre. Complex jobs involving multiple components or trace repair may take 4–5 working days. We include a 30-minute burn-in test before handover, and we contact you as soon as the console is ready.

What warranty do I get on a PS5 board repair?

Console Service Centre provides a 6-month warranty on all repairs, including board-level work. If the same fault returns within 6 months, we fix it free of charge. No small print, no "mechanical damage" exclusions for the same component.
