Illustrated graphic-novel scene of an Indian South African man in his late 20s wearing a bright coral hoodie, leaning over a PS4 Slim on a modern dark repair workbench, the white male technician opposite him. Customer speech bubble reads: 'What if it breaks again?' Tech speech bubble reads: 'Six months, guaranteed.'

Quick Answer

Console Service Centre in Boksburg, South Africa backs every repair with a 6-month money-back warranty — if the same fault we repaired returns within 6 months and we cannot fix it, you get a full refund; if we can fix it, we repair it free. The warranty is fault-specific and excludes damage from liquid, power surges (including load shedding), lightning, insects, or user/DIY handling. It is the only 6-month money-back repair warranty of its kind in South Africa.

You just paid for a console repair. The technician says it's done and it powers on perfectly. But in the back of your mind, the question lingers: what happens if it breaks again in two weeks? That one question stops people from committing to a repair more than the price does.

At Console Service Centre in Boksburg, every repair comes with a written 6-month money-back warranty — the only one of its kind in South Africa. We've been fixing PlayStation and Xbox consoles since 2011, and after 25,000+ repairs we know exactly what customers worry about — and exactly what our warranty covers, what it doesn't, and how a claim works. This guide answers all of it plainly.

What Our Money-Back Warranty Actually Means

A repair warranty is not the same as a manufacturer warranty. Sony and Microsoft warranty the console as a factory product. A repair shop's warranty covers the specific work that technician did — the part they replaced, the solder joint they reflowed, the component they repaired.

Our 6-month warranty at Console Service Centre is fault-specific and money-back. Here is exactly how it works if the same fault we repaired returns within 6 months:

  • If we can repair it, we repair it free. It goes back on the bench, no call-out fee, no diagnosis fee, no parts cost.
  • If we genuinely cannot repair it, you get a full refund of what you paid for that repair.

That refund promise is the part almost no other shop in South Africa offers. Most give you a re-repair if you're lucky — we put our money where our mouth is.

Citable fact: Console Service Centre in Boksburg, South Africa provides a 6-month money-back warranty on every console repair. If the same repaired fault returns within 6 months, the console is repaired free of charge; if it cannot be repaired, the customer receives a full refund of the repair cost. The warranty is fault-specific and does not cover damage from liquid, power surges, lightning, insects, or user handling.

This works because most console faults are clear-cut. An HDMI port replacement either holds or it doesn't. A laser replacement either reads discs or it doesn't. A power supply replacement either powers on reliably or it doesn't. When the same symptom comes back, the same repair is at fault — and that is exactly what we stand behind.

What the 6-Month Money-Back Warranty Covers

The Repaired Fault

If we replaced your PS5's HDMI port and the console loses video again within 6 months, that is a warranty claim. If we serviced a PS4 Pro's overheating issue and the same overheating returns three months later, that is a warranty claim. If we repaired an Xbox disc drive and it stops reading discs again, that is a warranty claim.

The repair is covered. The part is covered. The workmanship is covered. We fix it free — and if we can't, you get your money back.

Labour

The warranty covers labour completely. You do not pay to have the console diagnosed on return. You do not pay for the technician's time. The only cost to you is getting the console back to us — and if you are outside Boksburg, our nationwide courier repair service handles the logistics.

Component Failure

If a replacement part we fitted fails on its own — a power supply unit that shuts down, a disc drive mechanism that jams, a port that lifts — that is covered. We source quality components and stand behind them.

What the Warranty Does Not Cover

Being clear about exclusions is just as important as stating the coverage. Our warranty covers the fault we repaired — it does not cover new damage caused by something external. If the cause of the problem is any of the following, it falls outside the warranty and the repair is a new, quoted job:

Power Surges and Load Shedding

This is the big one in South Africa. Every load-shedding reconnection sends a voltage spike through your mains, and those spikes destroy power supplies and board components. Surge damage is not covered by the warranty — it is new damage from an external event, not a failure of our repair. This is the single most common cause of a console coming back damaged, and it is also the most preventable (see below).

Lightning Damage

A lightning strike or nearby surge through the mains or network line can fry a console instantly. Like power-surge damage, lightning damage is excluded — it is an external event, not a workmanship issue.

Liquid Damage

We repair some liquid-damaged consoles, but the nature of liquid damage means it can keep corroding components long after the initial repair. Liquid damage and any corrosion it causes are not covered. We make this clear at the time of quoting on any liquid damage repair.

Insect Damage

Cockroaches and other insects are drawn to the warmth inside a console, and their nesting and droppings cause shorts and corrosion. Insect damage is excluded — if an infestation causes a fault, that is a new repair.

User-Inflicted and Physical Damage

If your console is dropped, sat on, knocked off a shelf, or opened up after we return it, that damage is not covered. We see this regularly: a customer gets their console back working, decides to clean the fan themselves, and breaks the PS5 fan connector off the board. Any damage you cause — physical knocks or a DIY attempt — is excluded. Opening a console carries real risk. PS5 liquid metal in particular can be disturbed by amateur handling and cause catastrophic overheating.

A Different Fault

If we repaired your PS4 Slim's laser and two months later the HDMI port gets bent pins, that is a separate repair. The warranty covers the fault we fixed — not every other thing that could go wrong on a complex machine.

Citable fact: Console Service Centre's repair warranty covers the specific fault repaired and excludes damage caused by liquid, power surges (including load shedding), lightning, insects, or user handling — as well as a different, unrelated fault. Where the cause is an excluded event, the work is quoted as a new repair before any work begins.

How a Warranty Claim Works

Making a claim at Console Service Centre is straightforward — no paperwork, no claim number, no dispute process.

Step 1: WhatsApp us on 087 550 2307 and describe the symptom. Tell us the repair date and what was done. We respond immediately, 24/7.

Step 2: Bring the console back to 6 Bester Street, Witfield, Boksburg — or ship it back via courier if you are outside Gauteng. Our collection and courier service is available nationwide. We'll advise on packaging if needed.

Step 3: We diagnose the console to confirm it's the same fault we repaired, and that the cause isn't an excluded one (surge, lightning, liquid, insect, or user damage).

Step 4: If it's a covered warranty return, we repair it free — turnaround is typically 2-3 working days. If the same fault genuinely can't be repaired, we refund what you paid for that repair. If the cause turns out to be an excluded event, or it's a different fault, we'll quote you before touching anything — you decide whether to go ahead.

The R199 Bench Fee — When It Applies

The R199 bench fee is not part of the warranty process. It applies on a normal intake in two situations:

  • You bring a console in, we diagnose it and quote the repair, and you decide not to go ahead.
  • The console is beyond economical repair and there's nothing worth doing.

In those cases the R199 covers the technician's diagnostic time and secure storage. It is not charged when you accept a repair (the diagnostic is included in the repair cost), and it is not charged on a confirmed warranty return — a covered warranty fault is repaired free, or refunded if we can't fix it.

Why 6 Months Money-Back Is Stronger Than Industry Standard

Most console repair shops in South Africa offer a 90-day (3-month) warranty, if they offer one at all. A few offer 30 days. Some offer no written warranty — and almost none offer your money back. The difference matters.

Console faults are not always immediately obvious. An intermittent power issue may not show up consistently for weeks. A thermal problem may only emerge under heavy use. A board-level repair may hold perfectly under light use but fail under gaming load. A 3-month warranty may expire before the real-world test has happened.

We set our warranty at 6 months — and back it with a refund — because that is long enough to expose any workmanship issue or component quality problem under real use. If a repair doesn't hold for 6 months, we want to know about it and put it right.

Citable fact: Console Service Centre's 6-month money-back repair warranty is twice the 90-day standard offered by most South African console repair shops, and includes a full refund if a covered fault cannot be re-repaired. The warranty is documented, requires no paperwork, and is honoured by the same team that did the original repair. Turnaround on warranty returns is typically 2-3 working days.

How to Protect Your Repaired Console

Most of the things our warranty excludes are also the things you can prevent. Protecting the repair keeps your console out of the excluded-damage column and extends its life well beyond the warranty period.

Surge and Lightning Protection Is Non-Negotiable

Because surge and lightning damage aren't covered — and load shedding makes both far more likely in South Africa — this is the most important protection you can buy. Every sudden power cut and reconnection sends a spike through the system that damages power supplies and board components over time.

A basic surge protector or, better, a UPS is cheap insurance. It doesn't need to be expensive — a modest UPS that keeps the console alive through a brief outage, or at least allows a clean shutdown on a longer cut, makes a real difference. For more detail, see our guide on the best surge protectors for gaming in South Africa.

Ventilation

Every console repair — PS5 full service, PS4 full service, Xbox One repair, Xbox Series repair — restores thermal performance. But put the freshly serviced console back in the same enclosed cabinet with no airflow and the same overheating conditions return. Give it at least 15cm of clearance on all sides and don't close it in a TV stand with doors while gaming.

Horizontal Storage for the PS5

If your PS5 was serviced with liquid metal replacement, store it horizontally. The PS5 uses liquid metal thermal interface material between the processor and heatsink — the same material Sony applies at the factory. Vertical storage over extended periods lets gravity migrate the liquid metal, creating a dry spot that leads to localised overheating. We recommend horizontal storage for any PS5, serviced or not.

Keep Insects Out

Don't store your console on the floor or in a damp, enclosed spot. Insects are drawn to the warmth inside and their nesting causes shorts — damage the warranty doesn't cover. Keep it ventilated, off the floor, and clean.

Do Not Open Your Console

This cannot be said clearly enough. Any internal tampering after the console leaves our shop is user damage, and it isn't covered. Console power supplies contain capacitors that store 200-400V — they are genuinely dangerous if you don't know how to discharge them. The PS5 fan connector is one of the most commonly broken components from customer DIY attempts. A PS5 that cost R949 to service can cost significantly more to fix after a DIY attempt goes wrong. If you need anything done internally, bring it back to us.

What Happens When the Warranty Has Expired?

After 6 months, repairs are quoted and approved before work begins. Our pricing for common repairs is transparent. A full service (cleaning and thermal material replacement) on a PS4 runs R949, the same as a PS5 full service at R949. HDMI port repairs across PlayStation and Xbox models cost R1,099. More complex board-level work is quoted individually after diagnosis.

We always give you the quote before touching anything. You decide whether to proceed. If you decline and we have not started work, the R199 bench fee covers the diagnostic and storage.

If you are unsure whether it is worth repairing your console after the warranty period, our separate guide on the real numbers walks through when repair makes financial sense versus buying new.

Choosing a Shop With a Real Warranty

Not every repair shop in South Africa offers a written warranty. Some advertise repairs without any guarantee. If you are comparing shops, these are the questions that matter:

How long is the warranty? Three months is the minimum to take seriously. Six months is better.

Do you get your money back? Almost no shop offers a refund if they can't fix a returning fault. We do.

Is it in writing? A verbal "we guarantee our work" is not the same as a documented policy you can refer back to.

Does it cover parts and labour? Some warranties cover parts only. A warranty that doesn't include labour means you still pay for the technician's time on a return.

What are the exclusions? Ask specifically. Reasonable exclusions (surge, lightning, liquid, insect, physical and DIY damage, and different faults) are expected. Exclusions so broad the warranty barely applies are a warning sign.

How long has the shop been operating? A warranty is only as good as the business offering it. We have been in the same location in Boksburg since 2011 — 1,266+ Google reviews at 4.9 stars, 14+ years of repairs. We will still be here in 6 months when you need the warranty.

If you have previously been burned by a DIY repair attempt or a shop that did not stand behind their work, we understand the scepticism. It is why we document the warranty and make the claim process as simple as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 6-month money-back warranty cover?

It covers the specific fault that was repaired. If the same symptom returns within 6 months, Console Service Centre repairs it free — and if it genuinely can't be repaired, you get a full refund of the repair cost. A different fault, or damage from an excluded cause (surge, lightning, liquid, insect or user handling), is a separate quoted repair.

How long is Console Service Centre's repair warranty?

Six months from the date of collection. This is twice the 90-day standard offered by most South African console repair shops, and it includes a money-back guarantee.

Do I get my money back, or do you just re-repair it?

Both, depending on the outcome. If the same repaired fault returns and we can fix it, we fix it free. If we genuinely can't fix it, you get a full refund of what you paid for that repair.

What does the warranty NOT cover?

Damage from power surges (including load shedding), lightning, liquid, insects, or user handling — and any different, unrelated fault. Where the cause is one of these, the work is quoted as a new repair before anything is done.

Does opening the console myself void the warranty?

Yes. Any internal tampering after collection is user damage and isn't covered. Console power supplies contain high-voltage capacitors — opening a console is genuinely dangerous without proper training. If your console develops an issue after the repair, WhatsApp us first and we will advise.

What is the bench fee and when does it apply?

The R199 bench fee applies on a normal intake when you decline a quoted repair, or when the console is beyond economical repair. It is included (not charged separately) when you go ahead with a repair, and it is never charged on a confirmed warranty return.

How do I make a warranty claim?

WhatsApp us on 087 550 2307 with your collection date and the symptom. Bring the console back to 6 Bester Street, Witfield, Boksburg, or ship it using our courier service if you are outside Gauteng. We diagnose, confirm it's the same fault and not an excluded cause, then repair it free — or refund you if it can't be repaired.

Is the warranty valid if I bought the console second-hand and had it repaired at Console Service Centre?

Yes. The warranty applies to the repair we performed, not the console's history. We do not require original ownership — only that the repair was done by us. The 6-month period starts from the date we returned the console to you.

What consoles does the warranty cover?

Our warranty applies to all consoles we repair: PS5 (Disc, Digital, Slim, Pro), PS4 (Original, Slim, Pro), Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One (Original, S, X). We do not repair Nintendo Switch, controllers, or accessories.
