Your PS5 was fine last week. Now it crashes mid-game, freezes on the home screen, or reboots itself without warning. Sometimes it throws an error code. Sometimes it just goes black. At Console Service Centre in Boksburg, we repair PS5s every day — crashes and freezes are one of the most common faults we see, and they come from a handful of specific causes. This guide walks through each one, starting with the free software fixes and working through to the hardware issues that need professional attention. Most PS5 crash faults are fixable. The key is diagnosing which category yours falls into.
Try These First — Quick Software Fixes
Before assuming the worst, work through these steps in order. They resolve well over half of PS5 crash and freeze complaints.
1. Disable Rest Mode Completely
Multiple PS5 firmware updates have included fixes for rest mode stability issues. The PS5 sometimes fails to resume properly from rest mode, resulting in corrupted temporary data that causes crashes on boot or mid-session freezes.
- Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode
- Set both options to Don't Put in Rest Mode
- Shut down the PS5 fully — hold the power button until it beeps twice, confirming a complete shutdown rather than sleep
Test across several gaming sessions. Rest mode crashes disappear immediately once rest mode is disabled for most affected consoles.
2. Update System Software
An outdated PS5 firmware can conflict with newer game patches and cause random application crashes.
- Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings
- Select Update System Software
- If the console crashes before you reach this menu, update via Safe Mode (covered in the detailed fixes section below)
3. Full Power Cycle — Not Just a Restart
Load shedding interruptions in South Africa frequently corrupt PS5 temporary data. A full power cycle clears it properly.
- Hold the PS5 power button until it shuts down completely — wait for the second beep
- Unplug the power cable from the back of the PS5, not just from the wall
- Wait a full 60 seconds — the capacitors need time to discharge completely
- Plug back in and power on
A soft restart via the controller menu doesn't clear the same data as a full power cycle. If your PS5 was interrupted mid-session by load shedding, this step is the first thing to try.
4. Check Available Storage Space
The PS5 needs free storage space to cache game data during play. Running below roughly 10% free causes mid-game crashes as the console runs out of room to write temporary files.
- Go to Settings > Storage
- Check the Console Storage bar — look at how much is in use
- Delete screenshots, video captures, and finished games you no longer play
- If your storage is above 90% full, this is very likely the cause of crashes
5. Is Your Console Running Hot?
If the PS5 crashed and the upper surface feels very warm, thermal protection may have kicked in. Before doing anything else: shut it down, move it somewhere open with airflow, and let it cool for at least 30 minutes. Then power on and test again. If it crashes again after 30-60 minutes of play but runs fine for the first few minutes, overheating is the cause — read the hardware section below.
What Causes a PS5 to Crash or Freeze?
If the quick fixes above didn't resolve the problem, the crash is coming from one of the following causes. Identifying which one saves significant time.
Corrupted Game Database
The PS5 maintains a database of all installed game data and save files. Power interruptions — especially unplanned load-shedding shutdowns — can corrupt entries in that database. When the PS5 tries to read from a corrupted section during loading or gameplay, it crashes.
Symptoms: Crashes happen on specific games only; crashes occur when loading a save file; you see error code CE-100096-8.
The PS5's game database acts like the index in a library — if an index entry is corrupted, the system can't find the data it needs and gives up. A database rebuild scans the entire index and repairs corrupted entries. Most load-shedding-related PS5 crashes are fixed by this one step alone, and it takes under 30 minutes with no data loss.
Rest Mode Bug
The PS5 firmware has had persistent rest mode issues across multiple hardware revisions. The console sometimes writes incomplete data when entering rest mode, and when it wakes, it can't finish what it was doing. This causes freezes on the home screen after wake-up, crashes within the first 10 minutes of a session, or corrupted application data.
Symptoms: Crashes consistently happen shortly after the PS5 woke from rest mode; the problem disappears when rest mode is disabled.
Overheating — Including Load Shedding Risk
The PS5 uses liquid metal — not thermal paste — between the main processor (APU) and the heatsink. This is why PS5 overheating repairs are different and more involved than PS4 or Xbox service. Liquid metal is affected by gravity. In consoles stored vertically for extended periods, the metal gradually migrates downward, leaving the top of the APU with thin or no thermal coverage. The processor then overheats during demanding gaming sessions and shuts the console down to protect itself.
South African conditions accelerate this. Dusty environments block the PS5's exhaust vents faster than in milder climates. Load shedding forces frequent power cycles without clean shutdowns, adding stress to every component.
Symptoms: Crashes happen after 30-60 minutes of play (console runs fine cold); the fan runs loudly before the crash; the upper surface of the PS5 is very warm after a crash.
Corrupted or Failing SSD
The PS5 uses a custom 825GB NVMe SSD. SSDs can develop bad sectors over time — areas of storage that can no longer be reliably read. When the PS5 tries to load game data from a bad sector, it freezes or crashes. Unlike database corruption, which is a software issue fixed by rebuild, bad sectors indicate physical SSD degradation that will worsen over time.
Symptoms: Crashes happen while loading large open-world games; error code CE-100028-1 appears (storage fault); multiple different games crash rather than just one; games take noticeably longer to load before crashing.
Firmware or Application Bug
Occasionally a PS5 system update introduces new instability, or a game patch conflicts with specific PS5 hardware revisions. These faults are usually resolved in subsequent updates.
Symptoms: Crashes began immediately after a system update; only one specific game crashes; other PS5 users are reporting the same crash on the same game patch version.
Disc Drive Error (Disc Edition PS5 Only)
If your PS5 Disc Edition crashes when playing from disc but runs fine from digital downloads, the disc drive is likely failing — a worn laser, loose drive connector, or degraded cradle mechanism.
Symptoms: Crash or freeze with physical disc games only; digital versions of the same games run without issue.
How to Fix a PS5 That Keeps Crashing — Step by Step
Rebuild the Database in Safe Mode
This is the most effective software fix for PS5 crashes. It doesn't delete any games or saves — it scans and repairs the file database, removing corrupted entries.
- Turn the PS5 completely off (not rest mode) — hold the power button until the second beep
- Hold the power button again until you hear two beeps — about 7 seconds after pressing — to enter Safe Mode
- Connect your DualSense controller with a USB cable (Bluetooth does not work in Safe Mode)
- Press the PS button on the controller
- Select Option 5: Clear Cache and Rebuild Database
- Confirm and wait — this takes 10-30 minutes depending on storage used
The PS5 restarts normally once complete. Test with the game that was crashing.
Update System Software via Safe Mode
If the console crashes before you can access the normal Settings menu:
- Enter Safe Mode (steps above)
- Select Option 3: Update System Software
- Choose Update via Internet
Reset PS5 While Keeping Games (Option 6)
If database rebuild doesn't resolve crashes, a partial reset clears all console settings while keeping your installed games and saves intact.
- Enter Safe Mode
- Select Option 6: Reset PS5 (Keep Games and Apps)
- Follow the prompts
This is not a factory reset — your downloaded games remain on the console.
Factory Reset (Option 7 — Last Resort)
A full factory reset wipes everything from the PS5. Use this only after all other options have failed. Back up game saves to PS Plus cloud storage or a USB drive first.
- Enter Safe Mode
- Select Option 7: Reset PS5
- Confirm the full wipe
After reset, re-download your games and restore cloud saves.
Delete and Reinstall the Crashing Game
If only one game crashes and everything else runs fine, the problem is that game's installation data, not the database.
- On the home screen, hover over the crashing game
- Press Options on the controller
- Select Delete
- Re-download from the PlayStation Store or reinstall from disc
The game data is deleted but your save file is kept separately and will still be there after reinstallation.
If multiple games crash rather than just one, this fix won't help — the problem is hardware or database-level, not a single game's data.
When the Crash Is Hardware — What Needs Professional Repair
Software fixes don't resolve hardware faults. If Safe Mode, database rebuild, and factory reset leave the problem unchanged, the fault is physical. These are the PS5 hardware repairs we see most often at our Boksburg workshop.
Liquid Metal Degradation (Thermal Fault)
The PS5's liquid metal interface degrades with age — particularly in vertically stored consoles where the metal migrates downward, compromising coverage of the upper portion of the APU. Extended gaming sessions push the uncovered areas of the processor to dangerous temperatures, triggering thermal shutdowns.
A PS5 overheating repair involves full disassembly, complete removal and cleaning of the old liquid metal from the APU and heatsink surfaces, fresh liquid metal reapplication with the correct containment gasket, fan and heat exchanger cleaning, and thermal testing under load to verify normal operating temperatures.
Cost: contact us for pricing
On DIY liquid metal replacement: The liquid metal used in the PS5 is electrically conductive. A spill onto the main board — from rough handling or an incorrect reapplication — can short-circuit components permanently. Sony's factory-applied gasket barrier requires correct reinstallation to contain the liquid metal properly. This repair requires professional equipment and experience. Attempting it without both risks permanent, unrepairable board damage.
SSD Failure
A failing SSD requires replacement. The PS5's built-in 825GB SSD is a non-standard part — not a swappable consumer M.2 drive — so sourcing and fitting the correct replacement is a professional job. If the SSD has failed completely, installed games will need to be re-downloaded after replacement — save data backed up to PS Plus cloud storage is recoverable.
This is one concrete reason to keep PS Plus cloud backups enabled. SSD failures rarely give warning before they happen — cloud-backed saves are insured against the most common failure modes.
Board-Level Fault
In rare cases — usually after a power surge during load shedding or after the console was dropped — a component on the PS5's main board corrupts or fails physically. No software fix will resolve this because the fault exists at the hardware level. Symptoms include crashes that start immediately without any warming-up period, that occur during the PS5 startup sequence rather than in a game, or that persist unchanged after a full factory reset.
Board-level repairs require specialised micro-soldering equipment and component-level diagnosis. We charge a R199 bench fee to diagnose these faults — if the repair is possible, we give you a full quote before any work is done. The bench fee is waived if you proceed.
Do not attempt to open the PS5 for hardware diagnosis. The fan connector sits close to the main board and is easily broken — customers who open their PS5 to investigate regularly rip this connector off, taking board traces with it. A R849 full service can become a multi-hour trace rebuild at considerably higher cost. If the fault is internal, leave it to professionals.
How to Prevent PS5 Crashes
Store Your PS5 Horizontally
Sony designed the PS5 for both orientations, but the liquid metal thermal interface is affected by gravity over time. Vertical storage allows liquid metal to migrate downward, creating thermal coverage gaps on the upper APU surface. Horizontal placement eliminates this migration. We recommend horizontal storage for all PS5 owners — if you prefer vertical, at minimum lay the console flat when not in use.
Use Surge Protection During Load Shedding
Voltage spikes when power returns after load shedding are a real risk to the PS5's SSD and main board. A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) with automatic voltage regulation keeps the console powered through brief interruptions and absorbs incoming voltage spikes. This is South Africa-specific guidance that most international PS5 guides omit entirely — load shedding is behind a significant portion of the SSD corruption and overheating faults we diagnose in our workshop.
Ensure Adequate Airflow
The PS5 needs at least 10cm of clear space on all sides. Common problems:
- PS5 inside a closed entertainment unit with no ventilation
- Stacked against another device blocking the exhaust vents
- Console pushed against a wall
If your unit is enclosed, leave the door open while gaming or move the console outside it.
Enable Automatic System Updates
System software updates include stability and crash fixes. Enable automatic updates:
- Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings
- Enable Download Update Files Automatically
- Enable Install Update Files Automatically

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my PS5 crash on specific games but not others?
The most likely cause is corrupted installation data for that specific game. Delete the game (your save file won't be deleted) and reinstall it from the PlayStation Store or from disc. If the crash returns after reinstallation, the game may have a firmware compatibility issue — check whether other users are reporting the same crash on the same game patch and update your PS5 system software.
Why does my PS5 freeze and then restart itself?
Automatic restart after a freeze usually means the PS5 triggered a protective shutdown — either thermal (overheating reached critical levels) or a critical system error that forced a recovery restart. If the restart happens after 30-60 minutes of play, overheating is the most likely cause. If it happens immediately or in the first few minutes, suspect database corruption or a software fault.
Does rebuilding the PS5 database delete my games or saves?
No. Database rebuild (Safe Mode Option 5) scans and repairs the file index without touching any game data or save files. It's safe to run and won't lose you any progress. The only Safe Mode option that deletes data is Option 7, the full factory reset.
How long does PS5 crash repair take at Console Service Centre?
Software diagnosis and database rebuild takes 30-60 minutes. Hardware repairs — full service, liquid metal reteam — typically take 2-3 working days from when we receive the console. We test every PS5 under load after repair to confirm the crash fault is resolved before returning it.
Is it worth repairing a PS5 that keeps crashing?
Almost always yes. The most common hardware cause — liquid metal degradation — costs contact us for pricing to fix and restores the console to normal thermal performance. We've repaired hundreds of PS5 units that customers assumed were beyond fixing. The vast majority are fully repairable.
Can load shedding cause a PS5 to crash?
Yes. When load shedding cuts power without a clean PS5 shutdown, the console sometimes fails to write data correctly, resulting in corrupted database entries. Running database rebuild (Safe Mode Option 5) after any unplanned power cut is worthwhile preventive maintenance. A UPS prevents the issue entirely by keeping the PS5 powered through brief outages.
What is PS5 error code CE-108255-1?
Sony's official description for CE-108255-1 is simply that "an error occurred with the game/application", and their first recommended fix is to update the affected game. Start there — check for a game patch and install the latest PS5 system update. If the error continues, delete and reinstall the crashing game. If it then appears across several different games rather than just one, the cause is more likely system-level (database corruption or, in rare cases, a failing SSD) — at that point a database rebuild (Safe Mode Option 5) is the next step, and persistent errors after that warrant professional diagnosis. See our PS5 error codes guide for a full breakdown of CE, WS, and SU codes.
