Your PS4 is on — you can hear the fans, the light is white — but your TV shows nothing. Or worse, the picture flickers and cuts in and out every time the cable moves. If any of that sounds familiar, you are almost certainly dealing with a damaged HDMI port.
PS4 HDMI port damage is one of the most common hardware faults we see at Console Service Centre. After 14 years and 25,000+ console repairs in Boksburg, we have fixed more damaged HDMI ports than we can count. Most cases arrive with the same story: someone yanked the cable at an angle, the console got knocked off a shelf, or the port just quietly degraded over years of normal use. The result is always the same — no video output, and a very frustrating evening.
This guide covers every symptom, every cause, what you can safely check yourself, and what a professional HDMI port repair actually involves. If your PS4 port is physically damaged, a home fix is not possible — but professional repair is affordable and worth doing.
Signs Your PS4 HDMI Port Is Damaged
Not every display problem is a damaged port. These symptoms point specifically to port damage rather than a software glitch or a faulty cable:
- No picture at all, even though the PS4 powers on normally — fans spin, light turns white, but the TV shows "No Signal"
- Picture disappears when you touch or move the HDMI cable — the connection is intermittent
- Visible damage when you look into the port — bent pins, pins pushed to one side, or the port sits loose in the housing
- The cable feels loose or wobbly when plugged in — a healthy HDMI port holds a cable firmly
- Works on one TV but not another — different HDMI cables at the same resolution work, ruling out the cable itself
- Screen flickers once then goes black — the handshake between console and TV is failing repeatedly
The most reliable indicator of physical port damage is the cable-wiggle test: if moving the cable slightly brings the picture back for a second, the port has a broken solder joint or a bent pin that is making intermittent contact.
What Actually Causes PS4 HDMI Port Damage

1. Physical Force — The Most Common Cause
The PS4's HDMI port is soldered directly to the motherboard. The port is held in place by small mounting tabs and the metal shell is grounded to the board. When force is applied — someone yanks a cable, trips over it, or the console falls — those anchor points tear away from the board surface, called lifted pads.
Once the pads are lifted, the port can no longer hold the cable securely, and the electrical connections become unreliable. This is the most common cause of HDMI port failure across every PS4 model.
2. Worn Solder Joints From Normal Use
Even without any dramatic incident, the solder joints holding the HDMI port can crack over time. Plugging and unplugging cables thousands of times creates micro-stress on the joints. Eventually, one or more joints develop hairline cracks, and the connection becomes intermittent.
This type of failure tends to develop gradually — you might notice the picture occasionally glitching before it starts cutting out completely.
3. Bent or Collapsed Pins Inside the Port
The HDMI port contains 19 internal pins, each carrying a different signal. If a cable is inserted at an angle, or if something pushes against the port, those pins can bend. Bent pins either make no contact (no picture) or make contact with the wrong pin (corrupted signal, flickering, or no picture).
4. The HDMI Encoder Chip (a different problem)
PS4 models use a Panasonic HDMI encoder chip — MN86471A on the original PS4 and MN864729 on the Slim and Pro. When this chip fails, the PS4 boots normally but outputs no video, even with a brand-new port and cable. This is a separate fault from port damage and costs more to repair at our shop (see the pricing table below).
The easiest way to tell the difference: if pushing/wiggling the cable produces any change in the output (even briefly), it is almost certainly the port. If the output never changes regardless of what you do with the cable, the encoder chip is the more likely culprit.
Citable fact: PS4 HDMI port replacement at Console Service Centre in Boksburg, South Africa costs R799 for the PS4 Original and Slim, and R999 for the PS4 Pro — all prices include VAT and a 6-month warranty. If the HDMI encoder chip (MN86471A or MN864729) needs replacing alongside the port, the combined repair cost is higher.
What You Can Check at Home
Before assuming the port is damaged, rule out these simpler causes. They resolve a meaningful number of "HDMI problems" without any repair being needed.
How to Troubleshoot Your PS4 HDMI Issue
-
Try a different HDMI cable — Cables fail. Swap it for another one you know works. Make sure the replacement supports the resolution your PS4 is set to (1080p cables are universal; 4K needs a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for the PS4 Pro).
-
Try a different HDMI port on your TV — Most TVs have 2-4 HDMI inputs. The port on your TV may be faulty, not the port on your PS4.
-
Try a different TV or monitor — If the picture appears on another screen, the issue is with your TV or the specific HDMI input, not the PS4.
-
Power cycle the console completely — Hold the power button for 7 seconds until you hear the second beep, then unplug the power cable and leave it for 2 minutes. Plug it back in and try again.
-
Boot into Safe Mode — Turn off the PS4 completely (not rest mode). Hold the power button until you hear two beeps (about 7 seconds). Connect a DualShock 4 via USB cable and press the PS button. Select Option 2: Change Resolution and set the output to 480p. If picture appears in Safe Mode, the issue may be a resolution mismatch rather than port damage.
-
Check the HDMI port visually — Shine a torch into the port and look at the internal pins. Are any bent? Is the port sitting flush with the housing, or does it look cocked to one side? Can you see any obvious physical damage?
If none of the above produces a picture, and visual inspection shows damage, the port needs professional repair.
Can You Fix a PS4 HDMI Port Yourself?
No — not safely, and not effectively. This is one of the hardest repairs on a PS4 to get right, even for experienced technicians.
Here is why:
Requires a hot air rework station, not a soldering iron. The HDMI port is a surface-mount component with multiple connection points. Removing it requires controlled hot air at around 350-400°C directed precisely at the port — a standard soldering iron will burn the board and destroy surrounding components. This is verified in our technical facts: attempting HDMI port repair with a soldering iron will cause board damage.
Lifted pads require trace repair. When the mounting tabs tear away from the board, they often take copper pad material with them. Restoring electrical continuity means soldering fine jumper wires to the underlying traces — work that requires microscope vision and considerable skill.
DIY attempts cause more damage. We regularly see PS4s arrive with additional damage from attempted home repairs — scorched boards, shorted traces, and connector damage that turns a R799 repair into a far more expensive board-level job. Opening your console yourself also risks breaking the fan connector (a common and expensive casualty), stripping Torx screws, or cracking plastic clips.
A professional repair is cheaper than a failed DIY attempt. The original port repair might cost R799. A repair of the same fault plus DIY damage typically costs significantly more, if it is repairable at all.
If the port is confirmed damaged, send it to a professional.
What Professional PS4 HDMI Port Repair Involves

At Console Service Centre, every HDMI port repair follows the same process:
-
Full diagnosis — We do not just replace the port. We diagnose the root cause first. Sometimes the port looks fine but the encoder chip is the problem. We check both.
-
Port removal with hot air — The damaged port is removed using a calibrated hot air rework station. We protect surrounding components from heat damage during this step.
-
Pad and trace inspection — Under magnification, we inspect every solder pad. Lifted pads are repaired with fine copper wire jumpers bridged to the underlying traces. This step is what separates a good repair from a temporary one.
-
New port installation — We solder a replacement port onto the cleaned pads, ensuring all 19 signal connections and all 8 mounting tabs are properly connected.
-
Encoder chip check — We test video output after port installation. If there is still no output, we test the encoder chip separately to confirm it is working correctly.
-
Full video test — The repaired console is connected to a 1080p display and tested at multiple resolutions and refresh rates. We also test 4K output on Pro models.
-
Post-repair quality check — We wiggle the cable, test the connection with two different HDMI cables, and confirm there is no intermittent contact before returning the console.

Is It Worth Repairing a PS4 HDMI Port?
For most PS4s, yes — clearly.
The PS4 library has thousands of titles. Many PS4 games are not available on PS5, and even titles that are tend to cost more on the newer platform. A repaired PS4 with a fresh warranty is a functional gaming console at a fraction of the price of a PS5.
The cost equation is straightforward:
- PS4 Slim HDMI port repair: R799
- Cost of a second-hand PS4 Slim in working condition: R2,500 - R4,000
- Cost of a new PS5: R12,000+
Repair wins on value every time, unless the motherboard has additional damage that makes the repair uneconomical. We will always give you an honest assessment of whether repair makes sense for your specific unit.
The only scenario where we recommend against repair is when there are multiple concurrent faults — for example, a damaged HDMI port combined with a failing APU and a dead power supply. At that point, the cumulative repair cost may approach the value of the console.
How to Prevent PS4 HDMI Port Damage
Prevention is worth more than repair. These habits protect the HDMI port:
- Never pull a cable at an angle — Always grip the HDMI connector itself (not the cable) and pull straight out. Never tug the wire.
- Keep the console somewhere stable — A PS4 on a shelf at coffee table height is one pet/child bump away from falling. Higher is safer, or secure it in an entertainment unit.
- Use cable management — A loose HDMI cable dangling from the back of the PS4 puts constant leverage stress on the port. Route cables to remove tension.
- Do not use excessively heavy cables — Thick, stiff HDMI cables exert more mechanical stress on the port. Lightweight premium cables are better than thick cheap ones.
- Be careful during load shedding — Rushing to turn the console on before the lights go out, or off before the inverter switches over, is when cables get yanked hard. Slow down during transitions.
- Use a surge protector — While this will not protect the HDMI port specifically, it protects the power supply and motherboard from the voltage spikes common during loadshedding recovery in South Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my PS4 show no picture but the light is white?
A solid white light means the PS4 booted successfully, but no video is reaching your TV. The three most likely causes are: (1) a faulty or wrong HDMI cable, (2) physical damage to the HDMI port on the PS4, or (3) a failed HDMI encoder chip on the motherboard. Start by trying a different cable and a different HDMI port on your TV. If those tests show nothing, the port or encoder chip is the problem and the console needs professional diagnosis.
How much does PS4 HDMI port repair cost in South Africa?
PS4 HDMI port replacement at Console Service Centre in Boksburg costs R799 for the PS4 Original and Slim, and R999 for the PS4 Pro. If the underlying solder pads need trace repair (a common complication when the port has been physically torn off), that adds R695. All prices include VAT and a 6-month warranty.
How long does PS4 HDMI port repair take?
Most HDMI port repairs are completed within 1-3 business days at Console Service Centre. Complex cases involving trace repair or encoder chip work may take longer. We will give you an accurate time estimate after diagnosis. If you need the console urgently, mention it when you WhatsApp us.
Can a bent PS4 HDMI pin be fixed without replacing the port?
Sometimes. If only one or two pins are slightly bent, a skilled technician can straighten them without replacing the port. However, this is delicate work — pins that have been bent and straightened are weaker and prone to breaking. If multiple pins are bent, or if any pin has broken off, the port needs full replacement.
Does fixing the HDMI port delete my games and saves?
No. The HDMI port is a physical connector — it carries video and audio out of the console to your TV. Replacing it does not affect the hard drive, system software, user profiles, game saves, or installed games. Everything you have on the console stays exactly as it was.
What is the PS4 White Light of Death (WLOD)?
White Light of Death (WLOD) is when the PS4 shows a solid white light but no video output — identical symptoms to what a failed HDMI encoder chip produces. True WLOD is caused by the HDMI encoder chip (MN86471A on originals, MN864729 on Slim/Pro) failing, not the physical port. It looks exactly like an HDMI port problem from the outside, which is why professional diagnosis matters. See our guide to PS4 black screen and no display issues for the full symptom breakdown.
Can I use a USB adapter to bypass the HDMI port?
No. The PS4 does not support video output via USB. The HDMI port is the only video output on every PS4 model. There is no adapter or workaround — if the port is damaged, it needs repair.
Is the PS4 HDMI port the same as the PS5?
Both use standard HDMI Type A connectors, but the PS4 and PS5 use different HDMI versions (HDMI 1.4/2.0 on PS4 vs HDMI 2.1 on PS5) and different encoder chips. The physical port connector is similar, but the repair procedure and components differ. We cover PS5 HDMI port repair in a separate guide.
