Quick Answer

Console Service Centre in Boksburg, South Africa, offers a full annual console service from R949 for all PS4, PS5, and Xbox models. The service includes complete disassembly, dust removal, fan cleaning, thermal material replacement (thermal paste on PS4 and Xbox, liquid metal on PS5), and post-service testing. Most consoles are ready within 2–3 working days.

Most of the consoles that come into our workshop with serious faults — overheating, loud fans, disc read errors — didn't need to be in that state. The damage built up slowly over months or years, and a single annual service would have stopped it. At Console Service Centre in Boksburg, we offer a full console service for all PS4, PS5, and Xbox models from R949. That service includes complete disassembly, dust removal, fan cleaning, fresh thermal material, and post-service testing. We turn around most consoles in 2–3 working days, and every service comes with a 6-month warranty. If you're asking whether your console needs a service, the answer is almost certainly yes.

What Most Console Failures Have in Common

Every console that fails eventually had a warning. The three most common precursors we see — in order — are overheating, dusty fans, and degraded thermal material. All three are preventable.

Consoles generate significant heat. A PS4 Pro running a demanding game can hit 70–80°C on the APU. A PS5 under load pushes even higher. The thermal management system — the heatsink, thermal material, and fan — are what keep those temperatures in check. When any of those components degrade, the console compensates by ramping the fan louder, throttling performance, or shutting itself down. Left long enough, the heat causes permanent damage to the APU, south bridge, or capacitors nearby.

Citable fact block: The majority of PS4 and Xbox One consoles over three years old have dried thermal paste as a contributing factor to overheating. Thermal paste typically lasts 3–5 years in a gaming console before it needs replacement. Dust compounds this — it acts as insulation, trapping heat inside the chassis and forcing the fan to work harder than it was designed to. At Console Service Centre, we estimate that 60–70% of overheating-related repairs could have been avoided with a timely annual service.

Signs Your Console Is Overdue for a Service

You don't need to open the console to spot these. They're all external symptoms of internal degradation:

Fan noise that wasn't there before. If your console sounds like a hairdryer on low when it didn't used to, the fan is compensating for heat that should be leaving through the heatsink. Dust in the fan assembly reduces airflow efficiency significantly.

Getting hot in places it didn't used to. The top or sides of the console running noticeably warm, especially within 30 minutes of powering on, is a thermal material issue.

Random shutdowns with no error code. This is thermal protection activating. The console shuts itself down before permanent damage can occur.

Disc drive noise or slow loading. The disc drive mechanism can collect dust over time, affecting laser tracking and disc spinning. This shows up as longer load times, discs not being accepted, or grinding sounds on spin-up.

Performance dips mid-game. Thermal throttling — the console deliberately slowing its processor to generate less heat — shows up as frame rate drops or stuttering during intensive scenes. It's subtle at first and gets worse over time.

Slow PS4 dashboard. While some of this is software, a heavily dust-loaded PS4 runs measurably slower even outside of games due to sustained thermal throttling.

If you're experiencing any two or more of these symptoms, the console is overdue. Book a console service before one of those shutdown events is the last one.

Quick External Checks Before Booking

These are things you can do without opening anything — and without risk:

  1. Clear the vents — Use a can of compressed air and blow through the vents from the outside only. Never insert anything into the vents, and don't try to spray inside the console. You won't clear deep dust this way, but you'll knock loose surface blockages. Keep the can upright to avoid propellant residue.
  2. Check the placement — Consoles need room to breathe. The PS4 and PS5 should not be in a closed entertainment unit or a tight TV cabinet. 10cm of clearance on all sides matters. If your console is enclosed, that's likely contributing to the heat.
  3. Check for firmware updates — An outdated firmware can sometimes trigger error codes that look thermal but are actually software. Run a system update and see if the symptoms change.
  4. Check the power connection — Loose power connections cause voltage instability that can mimic shutdown behaviour. Reseat the power cable at both ends.

If none of the above changes anything, the issue is internal and requires professional attention.

We strongly advise against opening the console yourself. Power supplies in all consoles contain capacitors that store 200–400V per cap — these can burn you or kill you if not properly discharged. Beyond the safety risk, we regularly see consoles come in with additional damage caused by DIY attempts: broken fan connectors, stripped screws, and torn flex cables that turn a simple service into a complex repair.

What a Full Console Service Includes: Our Actual Process

When we say "full service", we mean a complete strip-down and rebuild. Here's what actually happens:

1. Disassembly

The console is fully disassembled to individual components. Every screw, every cable, every panel comes off. We do this properly — we have the right screwdrivers (PS4 and PS5 use security Torx T8 and T9, among others), and we track every screw by placement.

2. Cover Washing

All plastic covers and panels are washed and dried. Years of fingerprints, dust, and grime come off. The exterior goes back on looking clean.

3. Internal Dust Removal

Every internal component — the main board, heatsink fins, power supply housing, disc drive assembly — gets cleaned of dust and debris. We use specialised tools for this, not compressed air alone. Deep dust in heatsink fins often looks like felt matting; it has to be physically removed, not just blown.

4. Fan Cleaning

Fan blades collect dust on their trailing edges, which unbalances the fan and reduces airflow efficiency. We clean each blade individually and check the bearing for wear. A fan in poor condition gets flagged for replacement.

5. Thermal Material Replacement

This is the most technically significant step, and it varies by console:

  • PS4 (Original, Slim, Pro): Thermal paste between the APU and heatsink is fully removed — both surfaces cleaned back to bare metal — and fresh, high-quality thermal paste is applied. We use a tested, non-metallic compound specifically chosen for gaming consoles (metallic particles in paste can cause short circuits on bare APU dies).
  • PS5 (Disc, Digital, Slim, Pro): Sony uses liquid metal — a gallium-based alloy — as the thermal interface between the APU and heatsink. Liquid metal conducts heat far better than paste (~73 W/mK vs ~8 W/mK), but it's electrically conductive. We clean the old liquid metal from both surfaces, check and reseat the containment gasket, and apply fresh liquid metal. This is not a DIY procedure. A spill can short-circuit the PS5's motherboard.
  • Xbox One (Original, S, X): Standard thermal paste, same process as PS4. Xbox Series X also uses thermal paste with a vapour chamber heatsink.
  • Xbox Series S: Standard thermal paste replacement.

6. Reassembly and Cable Routing

Everything goes back together with correct torque and proper cable routing. We check connectors are fully seated and nothing is pinched.

7. Post-Service Testing

The console runs through a full test cycle: boot test, temperature check under load, fan speed verification, disc drive test (if applicable), HDMI output test, and controller sync. We're looking for stable temps, quiet fan operation, and no error codes after 20 minutes of load.

PS4 Service: Where Most of the Damage Lives

The PS4 — especially the original CUH-1000 series and the Pro — is the console we see most often for overheating-related faults. Thermal paste was the standard Sony choice for all PS4 models, and it degrades faster than liquid metal under real gaming loads.

Citable fact block: A PS4 with no service history and three or more years of regular use typically arrives at our workshop with thermal paste that has turned chalky and cracked. We've measured temperature drops of 15–25°C after a full service on heavily used PS4 Pros. The full service includes disc drive cleaning, which restores laser accuracy lost to dust accumulation — most PS4 disc read issues we see are cleaning problems, not hardware failures.

The PS4's disc drive uses a laser-based reading mechanism that degrades faster in dusty environments. Dust on the laser lens causes read errors, slow loading, and eventually disc rejection. Our service includes cleaning the disc assembly and checking the laser — in most cases, a clean resolves the issue without a laser replacement. PS4 repair at Console Service Centre starts with a proper diagnosis, so you only pay for what's actually needed.

For a PS4 that's been running hot and loud:

A full service is R949. This resolves thermal paste degradation, fan noise, and disc read issues in the majority of cases.

PS5 Service: Why Liquid Metal Makes This Different

The PS5 uses liquid metal rather than thermal paste. This is the right choice for a high-performance console — liquid metal's thermal conductivity is roughly nine times better than quality thermal paste. But it creates complications that don't exist with paste-based systems.

Liquid metal can migrate under sustained temperatures. If a PS5 is stored vertically for extended periods, the liquid metal can shift downward due to gravity, creating an area of the APU with no thermal coverage. That area overheats locally and severely — we've seen PS5 APUs crack from this. We recommend keeping PS5 consoles horizontal.

After 18–24 months of regular use, liquid metal can also oxidise or dry out at the edges of the application zone. The PS5 service involves fully replacing the liquid metal — both surfaces cleaned, the foam containment gasket inspected, and fresh liquid metal applied with correct quantity and coverage.

R949 covers the complete PS5 service including liquid metal replacement. PS5 repair and service at our Boksburg workshop includes a post-service temperature check under load to confirm the thermal system is performing correctly.

Xbox Service: Vapour Chambers and Standard Paste

Xbox Series X uses a large vapour chamber heatsink and a single 130mm exhaust fan. This is thermally efficient and tends to run cooler than PS4 or PS5 under equivalent load. But dust still accumulates in the fan and heatsink fins, and the thermal paste still degrades.

Xbox One Original consoles come in with a specific additional problem: the external power brick. That brick contains capacitors and internal components that accumulate their own heat damage over time. We check the brick and the internal board for any signs of power supply degradation during an Xbox One service.

Xbox Series S — the compact all-digital console — runs hotter per unit volume than the Series X due to its smaller chassis. Less airflow space means dust accumulates faster. The Series S typically benefits from a service at the 18–24 month mark rather than waiting two full years.

Xbox repair and service at Console Service Centre covers the full range: Xbox One Original through Xbox Series X and S.

How Often Should You Service Your Console?

The answer depends on the console model and your environment:

ConsoleRecommended Service IntervalNotes
PS4 Original / Slim / ProEvery 12–18 monthsThermal paste degrades faster in high-use consoles
PS5 (all models)Every 18–24 monthsLiquid metal oxidises slowly; vertical storage accelerates this
Xbox One (all models)Every 12–18 monthsOriginal model has external brick that also needs checking
Xbox Series XEvery 24 monthsVapour chamber runs cooler; lower dust impact
Xbox Series SEvery 18 monthsSmall chassis = faster dust accumulation

Environments with pets (pet hair blocks vents quickly), heavy smokers, or very dusty rooms should halve these intervals. If you live in a highveld area with dry dust, or you play daily for 4+ hours, service sooner.

Load shedding is a South African-specific factor. Power spikes during load shedding stress capacitors and power supplies even when you have a surge protector. If your area has frequent Stage 4–6 load shedding, consider an annual service regardless of console model.

The Real Cost of Skipping the Annual Service

An annual service costs R949. Here's what happens when consoles don't get serviced:

Fan failure from unbalanced, dust-laden blades: Fan replacement is R1,225. That's the repair cost plus the diagnostic time, and you still don't have the fresh thermal paste that would have come with the service.

HDMI port damage from sustained heat stress: The HDMI port solder joints weaken under repeated thermal cycling. HDMI port replacement is contact us for pricing — more than the annual service would have cost.

APU failure (Blue Light of Death on PS4): This is what prolonged overheating eventually causes. APU-related repairs — reball, reflow, south bridge chip replacement — start from R1,670 and the outcome isn't guaranteed. Once the APU has been heat-damaged repeatedly, no repair returns it to full health permanently.

Citable fact block: At Console Service Centre, the average repair bill for a console that arrives with overheating-induced hardware damage is significantly higher than the annual service cost. An annual service at R949 prevents the class of damage that leads to component replacement. In straightforward terms: one service per year is cheaper than one repair every two years.

Between-Service Prevention Tips

You can't replicate what a full strip-down does, but you can slow down degradation between services:

Keep it horizontal. This applies to PS4 and PS5 especially. Vertical placement increases the chance of thermal material migration and creates asymmetric airflow. Horizontal is always safer.

Give it breathing room. At least 10cm clearance on all sides. If your TV cabinet has a closed rear, the console will run 10–15°C hotter than it should. That difference, sustained over months, compounds.

Use a surge protector — always. South African power supply isn't consistent. A quality surge protector absorbs voltage spikes during load shedding events. We've seen power supplies fail from a single unprotected surge. Our guide to surge protectors for South African gaming covers what to look for.

External cleaning with compressed air. Every 2–3 months, blow through the vents from the outside with a can of compressed air. This won't reach internal dust but removes surface blockages from the intake vents.

Power off properly. Standby mode keeps the APU partially active. For extended periods without use (more than a week), full power-off is better for the thermal system.

Keep it clean and dry. Moisture from humid environments can cause corrosion on exposed board traces. Keep the console in a ventilated room away from external moisture sources (kitchens, bathrooms, or any room that steam-fills regularly).

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a console service cost in South Africa?

A full console service at Console Service Centre costs R949 for PS4 and Xbox models, and R949 for PS5 models. All prices include 15% VAT. The service covers complete disassembly, dust removal, thermal material replacement, fan cleaning, and a post-service load test with a 6-month warranty.

Can I clean my console myself?

You can safely clean the exterior and blow through the vents with compressed air from the outside. We strongly advise against opening the console yourself. Console power supplies contain capacitors that store 200–400V — these are genuinely dangerous if not properly discharged. Beyond the safety risk, the most common additional damage we see in DIY attempts involves broken fan connectors, torn flex cables, and stripped screws — each of which increases the overall repair cost.

How do I know if my PS5 needs the liquid metal replaced?

A PS5 that overheats, shuts down under load, or runs its fan louder than usual after 18–24 months of regular use likely has degraded liquid metal as a contributing factor. Liquid metal doesn't have to be completely depleted to cause problems — partial oxidation or migration is enough to reduce thermal conductivity significantly. If your PS5 is over 18 months old and showing thermal symptoms, book a PS5 service and we'll confirm during the strip-down.

How long does a console service take?

Most consoles are serviced and tested within 2–3 working days. If we find additional faults during the strip-down (a fan bearing that's failing, a disc drive laser that needs replacement), we'll contact you before proceeding with any additional work.

Does the service delete my games or saves?

No. The service is purely hardware — we don't touch the storage drive or perform any software operations. Your games, saves, and profile data are intact. The only exception is if the console requires a factory reset as part of troubleshooting a software fault — and we would only do that with your explicit approval.

Is it worth servicing an older console like the PS4 Original or Xbox One?

Yes, in most cases. A well-serviced older console runs reliably for many more years. The PS4 Original, despite being over a decade old, remains a capable gaming machine. The service cost is a fraction of what a replacement would cost — and your digital library, saves, and installed games stay with the console. If the service reveals underlying hardware damage (failed APU, for example), we'll tell you clearly and let you make an informed decision. We don't service consoles beyond their economic life without flagging it first.

Can I book a service for multiple consoles at once?

Yes. If you have multiple consoles needing service, bring them in together and we'll service them in parallel where possible. WhatsApp us at 087 550 2307 to confirm turnaround timing before dropping them off.
