Console repair cost breakdown in South Africa showing PS5 PS4 and Xbox repair pricing factors

Quick Answer

Console repair in South Africa typically costs between R699 and R2 530 depending on the fault. HDMI port replacement starts from R695, disc drive repairs from R920, and power supply replacements from R1 215. All prices include VAT. Console Service Centre in Boksburg, South Africa provides upfront quotes with no hidden fees and a 6-month warranty on all repairs.

Your console just died, and the first question on your mind is probably: "How much is this going to cost me?"

We completely understand. Nobody wants to hand over their PlayStation or Xbox without knowing what they're in for financially. The problem is that most repair shops either hide their pricing behind a "contact us" wall or throw out a flat price list that doesn't actually tell you what your specific repair will cost.

Since 2011, with more than 25,000 console repairs at Console Service Centre, we've seen every possible fault, on every model, at every price point. In this guide, we'll break down exactly what drives the cost of console repair in South Africa, what the most common repairs involve, and how to decide whether repair is the right choice for your situation.

Below you will find our live pricing tables -- these pull directly from our system so they are always up to date. We will also give you the knowledge to understand what you are paying for and why.

What Determines Console Repair Cost in South Africa?

Before we get into specific consoles, it helps to understand the five main factors that determine what any console repair will cost you in South Africa:

1. Type of Repair Required

This is the single biggest factor. A simple full service (cleaning and thermal reapplication) costs significantly less than an HDMI port replacement that requires micro-soldering under a microscope. The more complex the repair, the more skill, time, and equipment it demands.

Here's a rough complexity scale from simplest to most involved:

  • Full service / cleaning -- Straightforward disassembly, cleaning, and thermal interface reapplication
  • Power supply replacement -- Component swap (complexity varies by model)
  • Hard drive / SSD replacement -- Relatively simple on most models
  • Disc drive repair -- Can range from a simple laser swap to a full drive replacement
  • HDMI port replacement -- Requires a hot air rework station and micro-soldering expertise
  • Motherboard-level repair -- The most complex and time-consuming category

2. Console Model

Not all consoles are created equal when it comes to repairability. A PS5 repair typically costs more than the equivalent PS4 repair because:

  • The PS5 uses liquid metal as its thermal interface (not standard thermal paste), which requires careful handling
  • PS5 components are more expensive to source
  • The PS5's HDMI 2.1 port is a more complex component than the HDMI 1.4/2.0 ports on older consoles

Similarly, an Xbox Series X repair may differ from an Xbox One S repair due to different internal architecture and parts availability.

3. Parts Availability and Cost

South Africa imports virtually all console repair parts. This means:

  • Exchange rate fluctuations directly affect parts pricing (a weaker Rand means more expensive parts)
  • Shipping times from international suppliers can vary
  • Some parts (especially for newer consoles) may have limited availability
  • Original manufacturer parts vs quality aftermarket parts can affect pricing

4. Skill and Equipment Required

There's a massive difference between a repair that requires basic tools and one that needs a hot air rework station, microscope, and micro-soldering skills. HDMI port repairs, for example, cannot be done with a standard soldering iron -- the pins are too small and too close together. This is why HDMI repairs cost more than, say, a hard drive swap.

5. VAT and Business Overheads

Since November 2025, Console Service Centre is VAT-registered. This means 15% VAT is included in all our repair pricing. When comparing prices between repair shops, always check whether the quoted price includes or excludes VAT -- it makes a significant difference.

Common Console Repairs and What They Involve

Let's look at the most common repairs we perform and what goes into each one. Understanding the work involved helps you appreciate why certain repairs cost what they do.

HDMI Port Repair

Why it's needed: Bent or broken pins inside the HDMI port, usually from rough cable insertion, tripping over the cable, or the console being knocked while the cable is connected.

What's involved:

  • Complete console disassembly
  • Removal of the damaged HDMI port using a hot air rework station at 350-400 degrees Celsius
  • Cleaning the solder pads on the motherboard
  • Soldering a new HDMI port with precision alignment
  • Testing with multiple displays and cables
  • Full reassembly and quality check

Why it costs what it does: This is a skilled micro-soldering job. It cannot be done at home, and it cannot be done with basic tools. The risk of board damage is real if performed incorrectly -- overheating the board can lift pads, damage traces, or harm nearby components. This is why you want an experienced technician with proper equipment.

We've written a detailed guide on PS5 HDMI port problems if you'd like to understand the symptoms and causes better.

Power Supply and No-Power Repairs

Why it's needed: Console won't turn on at all, or powers on briefly then shuts off. This is one of the most common issues we see -- our CRM data shows "No Power" as one of the top reasons customers bring consoles in.

What's involved:

  • Diagnosis to determine whether the issue is the power supply unit (PSU), the motherboard, or another component
  • If PSU: replacement of the internal power supply
  • If motherboard: further diagnosis and component-level repair
  • Testing under load to ensure stable power delivery

Important note: On all modern consoles (PS4, PS5, Xbox One S/X, Xbox Series), the power supply is internal. The only exception is the Xbox One Original, which has a notorious external power brick that was a common failure point. If you have an original Xbox One with a dead power brick, that's a relatively straightforward fix.

For more on power issues, check out our guides on PS5 not turning on and PS4 won't turn on.

Disc Drive Repairs

Why it's needed: Console won't accept discs, makes grinding noises, or can't read games/Blu-rays.

What's involved:

  • Disassembly and inspection of the disc drive mechanism
  • Diagnosis: Is it the laser assembly, the rollers, the drive motor, or the flex cable?
  • Repair or replacement of the faulty component
  • Calibration and testing with multiple disc types

PS5-specific complication: The PS5's disc drive is paired to the motherboard at the factory. This means you can't simply swap in a new drive from another PS5 -- it needs to be properly paired, or the console won't recognise it. This pairing requirement can affect the repair approach and cost.

Our PS5 disc drive troubleshooting guide covers the symptoms in detail.

Full Service (Cleaning and Thermal Reapplication)

Why it's needed: Console is overheating, fans are running constantly loud, or it's been a few years since the console was opened and cleaned.

What's involved:

  • Complete disassembly
  • Thorough cleaning of all dust, debris, and buildup
  • Removal of old thermal interface material
  • Application of fresh thermal compound
  • Fan inspection and cleaning
  • Reassembly and thermal performance testing

Critical PS5 difference: The PS5 uses liquid metal as its thermal interface, not standard thermal paste. Liquid metal is electrically conductive -- if it spills onto the motherboard during a service, it can short-circuit components and cause serious damage. This is why a PS5 full service requires more expertise (and costs more) than a PS4 full service, which uses standard thermal paste.

Read more about overheating causes and prevention in our console overheating guide.

Hard Drive and SSD Issues

Why it's needed: Corrupted data, extremely slow loading, console can't boot, or storage-related error messages.

What's involved:

  • Diagnosis of the storage device
  • PS4: The 2.5-inch SATA hard drive is user-replaceable in theory, but data migration and system reinstallation require care
  • PS5: The internal custom 825GB SSD is not user-replaceable. However, the PS5 has an expansion slot for an additional M.2 NVMe SSD
  • Xbox: Internal storage varies by model and is generally not user-serviceable

Our console hard drive problems guide covers the warning signs to watch for.

PS5 Repair Cost: What Drives the Price

The PlayStation 5 is our most-repaired console, making up nearly half of all repairs we handle. Here's what you need to know about PS5 repair costs specifically:

Why PS5 Repairs Can Be More Expensive

  1. Liquid metal thermal interface -- Unlike every other console that uses standard thermal paste, the PS5 uses liquid metal (an indium-based alloy) for heat transfer between the APU and heatsink. This provides superior thermal conductivity (~73 W/mK compared to ~8 W/mK for paste), but it's electrically conductive and requires specialised handling. Any full service or repair that involves opening the PS5's cooling system needs a technician who knows how to work with liquid metal safely.

  2. HDMI 2.1 port -- The PS5's HDMI 2.1 port supports 4K at 120Hz. It's a more complex component than older HDMI versions, and replacement requires the same precision micro-soldering as any HDMI repair.

  3. Paired disc drives -- As mentioned, PS5 disc drives are married to the motherboard. You can't just swap drives between consoles.

  4. Parts cost -- PS5 parts are newer on the market and generally more expensive than PS4 parts.

  5. Architecture complexity -- The PS5 houses a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU + RDNA 2 GPU on a single die, 16GB GDDR6 RAM, and a custom 825GB NVMe SSD. It's a sophisticated piece of hardware.

Most Common PS5 Repairs We Perform

Based on our actual repair data:

  • HDMI port damage -- The most common display-related repair
  • No power / power cycling -- Second most common overall
  • Disc drive not accepting or reading discs -- Frequent on disc edition models
  • Overheating -- Usually due to dust buildup or liquid metal degradation over time
  • Rest mode issues -- Often software-related, but can indicate underlying hardware problems

PS5 Digital vs PS5 Disc Edition

Here's something many people don't realise: the PS5 Digital and PS5 Disc editions share the exact same motherboard. The only difference is the disc drive assembly and its flex cable. So for any non-disc-related repair (HDMI, power, overheating), the cost is the same regardless of which edition you own.

PS4 Repair Cost: What Drives the Price

The PS4 is our second most-repaired console. The good news? PS4 repairs are generally more affordable than PS5 repairs.

Why PS4 Repairs Tend to Cost Less

  1. Standard thermal paste -- Unlike the PS5's liquid metal, the PS4 uses conventional thermal paste. It's easier and safer to work with, making full services quicker.

  2. Mature parts market -- The PS4 has been around since 2013. Parts are widely available and competitively priced.

  3. Simpler internal design -- While still a complex piece of electronics, the PS4's architecture is less intricate than the PS5.

  4. User-replaceable hard drive -- The PS4's 2.5-inch SATA hard drive can be swapped without specialist equipment, which simplifies storage-related repairs.

Most Common PS4 Repairs We Perform

  • Overheating -- The number one PS4 issue by far. Thermal paste degrades after 3-5 years, and dust accumulation makes it worse
  • HDMI port damage -- Same micro-soldering process as PS5
  • Blue Light of Death (BLOD) -- The PS4 pulses blue and never reaches white. Usually indicates APU solder joint failure
  • Disc drive problems -- Laser failure, ejecting randomly (especially CUH-1000/1100 models)
  • Power supply failure -- Internal PSU replacement

PS4 Model Differences

There are three PS4 variants, and they can affect repair complexity:

ModelHDMI VersionNotable Repair Considerations
PS4 Original (CUH-1000/1100/1200)HDMI 1.4Capacitive eject button issues on early models
PS4 Slim (CUH-2000)HDMI 2.0More compact, slightly different disassembly
PS4 Pro (CUH-7000)HDMI 2.0Higher wattage PSU, more heat output

Xbox Repair Cost: What Drives the Price

Xbox consoles make up a significant portion of our repair volume, spanning both the Xbox One family and the newer Xbox Series consoles.

Xbox One Family (Original, S, X)

The Xbox One generation has some unique characteristics that affect repair costs. See our Xbox One repair service page for full pricing.

  • Xbox One Original -- The only modern console with an external power brick. Power brick failures are common and relatively inexpensive to resolve. However, if the issue is on the motherboard side, costs increase.
  • Xbox One S -- Moved to an internal power supply. Compact design, generally straightforward to repair.
  • Xbox One X -- The most powerful of the trio, with a larger internal PSU and more heat output. Overheating repairs are more common on this model.

All Xbox One models use standard thermal paste, making full services straightforward compared to the PS5.

Unique Xbox One feature: The Xbox One has both an HDMI IN and HDMI OUT port. A surprising number of customers accidentally plug their cable into the HDMI IN port (designed for TV pass-through) and think their console is broken. Before paying for a repair, double-check you're using the HDMI OUT port.

Xbox Series X and Series S

  • Xbox Series X -- Internal PSU (315W), large vapour chamber heatsink, HDMI 2.1 port. Less prone to overheating than PS5 due to its excellent cooling design, but HDMI and power issues still occur. Visit our Xbox Series repair page for current pricing.
  • Xbox Series S -- Digital only (no disc drive). Smaller chassis means less airflow, so overheating can be a concern. It uses HDMI 2.1 and supports up to 1440p at 120Hz.

Important: The Xbox Series S has no disc drive at all. If someone tells you they can repair the disc drive on a Series S, walk away -- it doesn't have one. This is a common mix-up with the Series X.

Both Xbox Series models use standard thermal paste (not liquid metal), making thermal services simpler and less costly than on a PS5.

Is Console Repair Worth It? Repair vs Buying New

This is perhaps the most important question when facing a broken console. Here's our honest framework for deciding:

When Repair Almost Always Makes Sense

  • The repair cost is less than 50% of a new console's price. If you can fix your PS5 for significantly less than the retail price of a new one, repair is the clear winner.
  • Your console has a large digital game library. Your purchased games are tied to your PSN or Xbox account (not the console), but having to re-download everything and set up a new console is an inconvenience you can avoid.
  • The console is out of manufacturer warranty. Once the 12-month warranty expires, you're on your own for repairs regardless.
  • You want to reduce electronic waste. Repairing is the environmentally responsible choice.

When Replacement Might Be Better

  • Multiple major faults simultaneously. If the motherboard, PSU, and disc drive are all failing, the combined repair cost may approach or exceed replacement cost.
  • Severe physical damage. A console that's been dropped from a height, flooded, or severely impacted may have damage beyond economical repair.
  • Obsolete model with an affordable upgrade. If you have a base PS4 and were already considering upgrading to a PS5, a costly repair might tip the scales toward buying new.

The South African Price Context

We break this decision down in much more detail in our console repair vs buying new guide, but here is the short version. New consoles are expensive in South Africa relative to average income. A new PS5 retails for significantly more in Rand terms than in many other markets. This means the value proposition of repair is even stronger in SA than it might be elsewhere. A repair that saves you thousands of Rand compared to buying new is almost always worth it.

Additionally, the second-hand market for consoles is strong in South Africa. Even if you decide to sell your console after repair, a working console fetches a much better price than a broken one.

How Do I Avoid Overpaying for Console Repair in South Africa?

Not all repair shops are equal. Here's how to make sure you're getting good value:

Questions to Ask Before Handing Over Your Console

  1. "Do you offer a warranty on repairs?" -- Any reputable shop should offer at least a 3-month warranty. At Console Service Centre, we offer a 6-month money-back warranty on all repairs.

  2. "What's your assessment / bench fee policy?" -- Most professional shops charge a bench fee if you decline the repair or if the console is unrepairable. This is standard practice and covers the technician's diagnostic time. Ask about this upfront.

  3. "Do you specialise in consoles?" -- A shop that repairs phones, laptops, tablets, and consoles as a side service is not the same as a dedicated console repair specialist. Console-specific expertise means better diagnosis, faster turnaround, and higher success rates.

  4. "What equipment do you use for HDMI repairs?" -- If the answer isn't "hot air rework station" or "BGA rework station," they're likely not equipped for proper HDMI port replacement. A standard soldering iron will not do the job and risks permanent board damage.

  5. "Can I get a quote before you start?" -- You should always receive a diagnosis and quote before any repair work begins. Never agree to an open-ended "we'll fix it and tell you the cost after."

Red Flags to Watch For

  • No physical address -- A legitimate repair shop has a workshop you can visit or verify
  • No warranty offered -- If they won't stand behind their work, that's a concern
  • Prices that seem too good to be true -- Quality parts and skilled labour cost money. Extremely cheap repairs often use substandard parts or inexperienced technicians
  • No clear communication -- You should be able to reach the shop easily and get updates on your repair

How Can I Save Money on Console Repairs?

Prevention is always cheaper than repair. Here are practical steps to protect your investment:

Invest in Surge Protection

South Africa's power grid is unpredictable. Load shedding, power surges, and voltage spikes can damage sensitive electronics. A quality surge protector or UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for your gaming setup is one of the best investments you can make.

Keep Your Console Clean and Ventilated

  • Place your console on a hard, flat surface with plenty of airflow
  • Don't block the vents with books, controllers, or decorations
  • Keep it away from carpet and fabric that trap dust
  • Consider a periodic full service (professional cleaning and thermal reapplication) every 2-3 years

Handle Cables with Care

A huge number of HDMI port repairs could have been avoided by simply being gentle with the HDMI cable. Never force a cable in, never yank it out at an angle, and be careful not to trip over cables connected to the console.

Use Rest Mode Wisely

If you're experiencing issues with PS5 rest mode, consider using a full shutdown instead. Rest mode has been known to cause problems on some PS5 units, and a full shutdown is gentler on the hardware over time.

Keep Your Console Horizontal

This is especially important for PS5 owners. The PS5 uses liquid metal as its thermal interface, and when stored vertically for extended periods, the liquid metal can migrate downward due to gravity. This creates a dry spot on the APU with no thermal coverage, leading to severe localised overheating. We've seen PS5 APUs crack from this exact issue. Keep your PS5 flat (horizontal) whenever possible -- we sell horizontal stands for this purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does PS5 repair cost in South Africa?

PS5 repair prices start from R799 for a full service, with HDMI port repairs at R899 and power supply repairs from R1,580. See our full PS5 pricing table above for all repairs. The best way to get an accurate price for your specific issue is to WhatsApp us at 087 550 2307 -- we'll give you a quote before any work begins.

How much does PS4 repair cost in South Africa?

PS4 repairs are generally more affordable than PS5 repairs due to simpler internals and more readily available parts. PS4 repairs range from R695 - R2,215. The most common PS4 repair is a full service (cleaning and thermal paste replacement), which is one of our most affordable services. See our full PS4 pricing tables above for all models and repairs.

Is it worth repairing a PS4 in 2026?

In most cases, yes. PS4 repair costs are typically a fraction of what a new console costs, and the PS4 still has a massive game library. If the repair cost is reasonable relative to the console's value, repair almost always makes financial sense. The only exception might be if you have multiple simultaneous faults that push the total repair cost too high.

Do you charge a bench fee if my console can't be fixed?

Most professional repair shops, including ours, charge a bench fee if the console is unrepairable or if you choose not to proceed with the repair after assessment. This covers the technician's diagnostic time and expertise. We're transparent about this upfront -- ask about it when you first contact us.

How long does console repair take?

Turnaround time depends on the repair type and parts availability. Many common repairs are completed within 1 to 3 working days. More complex repairs or those requiring parts to be ordered may take longer. We keep you updated via WhatsApp throughout the process.

Can I fix my console myself to save money?

Some basic maintenance (like cleaning dust from vents) is safe to do at home. However, we strongly advise against attempting HDMI port repairs, power supply replacements, or any repair requiring the console to be opened beyond the user-accessible panels. These require specialist equipment and expertise. A botched DIY repair often ends up costing more to fix than the original problem -- we see this regularly. Read our DIY vs professional console repair guide for a detailed breakdown of what is safe to try and what is not.

Do you offer a warranty on repairs?

Yes. All repairs at Console Service Centre come with a 6-month money-back warranty. If the same issue returns within the warranty period, we fix it at no additional charge. This is one of the reasons it's worth choosing a reputable, established repair shop over a cheaper alternative with no warranty.

What's the difference between a full service and a repair?

A full service is preventive maintenance: we disassemble your console, thoroughly clean all components, replace the thermal interface material (thermal paste on PS4/Xbox, liquid metal on PS5), inspect the fan and internals, and reassemble. A repair addresses a specific fault -- such as replacing a damaged HDMI port, fixing a power supply issue, or repairing a disc drive. Some consoles need both a service and a repair.

Do you repair consoles from all over South Africa?

Yes. We offer nationwide courier repairs via The Courier Guy. You ship your console to us (or we arrange door-to-door collection), we repair it, and ship it back. Whether you're in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, or anywhere else in SA, we can help.
